Obama’s Indonesia trip: Michelle dons headscarf as she visits mosque

it was no surprise that Michelle Obama managed to be stylish and show respect to her Muslim hosts when she visited a mosque on her tour of Indonesia.

The First Lady covered her hair with a beige animal-print scarf as she toured Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in southeast Asia.

Stylish? That isn’t really the adjective I have in mind when I see these photos:

  1. I think Catholics wear something quite similar when they visit the Pope. No big deal.

You’re right. But they didn’t want to go to the Golden Temple in India (Sikh) because they didn’t want to cover their head and because Obama didn’t want people to suspect he was a Muslim. As I posted on the background link, it wasn’t very well received in the country. But now when they get to Indonesia, where they have gone?
Exactly: to see the mosque. And Michelle was veiled.
By the way, that veil to see the Pope is only used when people go to see him in a private audience in Rome. The veil is something that I do not agree very much with even in that case, but we can’t consider that Rome has the same importance as a mosque in Indonesia. It would be similar to Mecca (where non-Muslims cannot enter).
