Ramallah Gets Five-Star Luxury Hotel

The city of Ramallah, less than half an hour north of Jerusalem, saw the opening this week of its first five-star luxury hotel, despite Palestinian Authority claims that Israel is strangling the local economy.

The hotel, a franchise of the Swiss-based Movenpick chain, has 171 rooms and suites, an outdoor pool, and a fitness center, and cost $40 million.

The opening was not entirely perfect, as the hotel is not yet set up to provide ice cream. Co-owner Talal Nasreddin spoke to the French news agency AFP and blamed the lack of ice cream on “Israeli procedures at the crossings.” Israel inspects goods imported to Judea and Samaria in order to prevent arms smuggling.

While AFP reported that foreigners have returned to Ramallah “as security has improved,” the article – and the PA officials it quoted – did not note Israel’s role in stemming terrorism in the region and creating initiatives to improve PA employment and ease travel in the region.

Found.

The hotel has costed 40 million dollars. Impressive hein?

Last question: Will Jews be allowed to go to this hotel or the judenfrei place (1, 2) will only be enacted once the “Palestinian” state will be constituted?

Google: openness for others, not for us

The criticism comes as the company continues to advocate for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to impose net neutrality rules that would target internet service providers (ISPs) while opposing so-called “search neutrality” that would impact both the company and its revenues in a manner that observers of the debate say could be particularly adverse to Google.

Last week, in a post on the official Google blog, the company’s senior vice president for product management, Jonathan Rosenberg, wrote that while Google’s “goal is to keep the Internet open,” it opposes the concept of “openness” where it would apply to its own search and ad products.

Ironically, the rationale behind Google’s opposition to “open internet” policy of this sort sounds remarkably similar to the rationale expressed by ISPs—which Google and other “open internet” advocates have targeted as the enemy in the current fight regarding FCC rules—for opposing net neutrality.  According to Rosenberg, opening up Google’s code “would actually hurt users” and result in “reduced quality” for those who rely on the service in question.

via Big Government » Blog Archive » Google: Openness for Thee, But Not For Me.

The reason they give not to “open” their search and ad is this one:

While we are committed to opening the code for our developer tools, not all Google products are open source. Our goal is to keep the Internet open, which promotes choice and competition and keeps users and developers from getting locked in. In many cases, most notably our search and ads products, opening up the code would not contribute to these goals and would actually hurt users. The search and advertising markets are already highly competitive with very low switching costs, so users and advertisers already have plenty of choice and are not locked in. Not to mention the fact that opening up these systems would allow people to “game” our algorithms to manipulate search and ads quality rankings, reducing our quality for everyone.

Well, that can be said by the rest of firms taking part in the web in their own markect sector. So, don’t be a bunch of hypocrites and don’t say you are for “Web openness”. Just say you are for it except when it can threaten your business… 🙄

A culture of peace should permeate all aspects of life: religious formation, education, interpersonal relations and the arts in their diverse forms. To this end, scholastic books should be revised in order not to contain material which may offend the religious sentiments of other believers, at times through the erroneous presentation of dogmas, morals or history of other religions.

“Don’t worry, it won’t smell like urine and will be tasty too,” he told The Times from his headquarters in Hardwar, one of four holy cities on the River Ganges. “Its USP will be that it’s going to be very healthy. It won’t be like carbonated drinks and would be devoid of any toxins.”

The movement has often been accused of using more violent methods, such as killing 67 Christians in the eastern state of Orissa last year, and assaulting women in a pub in Mangalore last month. It also has a history of targeting foreign business in India, as in 1994, when it organised a nationwide boycott of multinational consumer goods, including Pepsi and Coca Cola.

via Al Qaeda Lego Toys!

Gateway PunditThe character is called “Bandit — Mr. White” and sells for $14.

More antiterrorist idiocy from UK

Osama bin Laden’s ‘right-hand man’ Abu Qatada wins bail fight – Times Online h/t Kris.

An extremist Muslim cleric regarded as Osama bin Laden’s “spiritual ambassador in Europe” must be released on bail, a judge ruled yesterday.

Abu Qatada, 48, who won his legal fight against deportation to Jordan last month, will be freed from prison under strict bail conditions, amounting to 22-hour house arrest, despite being deemed a threat to national security.

The cleric applied to the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) for bail on the ground that it was inhumane to detain him indefinitely if there was no prospect of his being deported.

The order by Mr Justice Mitting to release him is the latest in a series of judicial decisions that undermine the Government’s stance on terrorism. In the past year, the courts have in effect rewritten sections of terrorism legislation and ruled that financial sanctions on terrorist suspects were absurd and unlawful.

So, errr, the same Government who wants to stablish a regulation to record all critizens’ e-mails and phone calls of all the people inside the UK, just in case they are needed in a counter-terrorist investigation. That same Government who has lost data and more data from those citizens. That same Government who has lost documents considered as Top Secret, first ones about Irak war and the fight against Al-Qaeda and then about how the terrorists get financed. That same Government who has filled London with security cameras to spy on their citizens, placing them even on dustbins and who has defended all that because “we can’t fight with 19th century means, 21st century challenges”… That same Government who has insisted a law must be passed to retain people for 42 days, at the most, without charging them in counter-terrorism processes….

That same Government has released one of the most dangerous terrorists in UK, Abu Qutada, considered the Bin-Laden’s Ambassador in Europe, on condition that: “he is banned from meeting with Osama Bin Laden in London”.

Just not giving my opinion. I am so angry… And no, this is not because someone is “imbecile” or that other is not “responsible enough”.

But don’t worry: in Spain, the Central Intelligence Agency (the Spanish one, not US) has being spying on a Constitutional Tribunal Judge, García-Calvo (against whom even a hookup was made) and who died some weeks ago just before having to take part in several very important decisions (homosexual marriage, Catalonian Statute), with presumably he would have voted against the Government’s position. And also we have the pedophile

*********

Bestiality ‘OK if animal approves’

View topic – Bestiality ‘OK if animal approves’ :: Free Dominion – Principled Conservative – Party and Canadian Politics – Canada Blogs

“Frank Kameny, a hero to the homosexual community who was integral in pressuring the American Psychiatric Association to reclassify same-sex activities as ‘normal,’ has written to a pro-family organization that he believes bestiality is fine, ‘as long as the animal doesn’t mind.’

In a weekend letter to Americans for Truth, an organization dedicated to revealing the truth about homosexuality, Kameny also said there is no such thing as ‘sexual perversion.’

‘Absolutely indisputably a central part of the very definition of Americanism is the guarantee, found in the Declaration of Independence, as not merely a Right, but as an Inalienable Right, of the ‘Pursuit of Happiness,” he wrote. ‘If something which someone arbitrarily defines as a ‘sexual perversion’ provides happiness for consenting adult participants, then its enjoyment is enshrined in basic Americanism.

‘So: Let us have more and better enjoyment of more and better sexual perversions, by whatever definition, by more and more consenting adults. We will all be the better off thereby. And that will be Americanism in action,’ he said.”

So err, how do we know the animal has consented???
****

"She lied about her virginity, marriage void"

*******

In Lille (France) a civil tribunal has considered the fact that the wife was not a virgin in the moment of the marriage, as a sufficient reason to declare the marriage void. If we read what are the causes to declare that, the article 80 of French Civil Code points to: a) consentment non-freely given; b) force made on any of the married to accept the marriage and c) error in the person or in one the person’s essential qualities, that it, those who are required to accept the marriage.

So in reality they are considering that the husband was not free to give his consent, was forced to give it or there was a error in the person or in one of the essential qualities of the wife to give it.

The annulment took place by the last of these causes. There could be a million of reasons for this, the same amount as there are marriages. For example, I have heard in Spain of a marriage where she told everyone was 31-years-old and when the moment came, it resulted she was 46. As the husband wanted to have children, told her about that as reason for marryind, she accepted it and it was proved that she was not able when she married by gynaecologic studies, the marriage was annuled.

So if he made it very clear for her that it was something essential for him to give his consent, I’m afraid this is possible, even if normal people would see this as a rather bad reason for the annulment. Because it is not the lack of virginity what makes the marriage void, but her lie about her virginity (or at least, that sounds as that, even in front of the Tribunal) what makes it void. I, myself, see this as a very astonishing interpretation, but as it is the husband (or wife) the one who should determine what are his/her reasons to give his/her consentment, this is (shockingly) possible. And the woman accepted it before the marriage, she did not say anything about rejecting that condition in particular.

The problem from my point of view is: can it be accepted as a sound proof of a woman’s lack of virginity, the lack of bleeding when having sexual relations? That is, for me, where the problem lies. The man was a doctor, the woman was a nurse. They both knew there are other kind of possibilities of producing a break of the hymen, such as riding a horse or practising several very engaging sports (martial arts or several types of gymnastics). The Telegraph does not say there were any other proofs made (gynaecological studies or similar at the time of the marriage).

But the problem here for me are the consequences, if the girl is a Muslim also (as it sounds). What is more, she is opposed to the Minister of Justice appealing the sentence, because she thinks it has been enough shame for her.

:

Mohammed Anwar said a ban would make it difficult to commute between his two wives and fulfil his matrimonial duties.

His lawyer told a Scottish court the Muslim restaurant owner has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow – he is allowed up to four under his religion – and sleeps with them on alternate nights.

He also needed his driving licence to run his restaurant in Falkirk, Stirlingshire.

Airdrie Sheriff Court had heard that Anwar was caught driving at 64mph in a 30mph zone in Glasgow, fast enough to qualify for instant disqualification.

Anwar admitted the offence, but Sheriff John C. Morris accepted his plea not to be banned and allowed him to keep his licence”.

What would have happened if he had killed or badly injured someone?
****

¿Qué hubiera pasado si hubiera matado a alguien?

El blog inglés Britain and America dice:

The flag of Saudi Arabia flies over The Mall in London today as a major state visit by the Saudi dynasty begins.  The Mall, which leads up to Buckingham Palace, is carrying a flag that declares: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his Messenger”.

Translation: 119 person killed in Saudi Arabia by beheading, condemned by the State, only this year. The last ones: Ibrahim al Saeed y Saad al Otaibi, for shooting a man and for stabbing another one after a fight.

It is a peaceful resting place for 350,000 souls – an historic graveyard which now serves as a nature reserve.

But plans are afoot to dig up the ancient graves at Tower Hamlets Cemetery – and reopen it as a 21st century burial site.

Officially it would be known as a “multi-faith” cemetery but it is likely that it would principally answer calls for a Muslim graveyard in the largely-Asian East London borough.

David Cameron intends to confront King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia today about the torrent of Saudi-sponsored extremist literature that is available in British mosques, The Times has learnt.

The Conservative leader will ask the Saudi King to curb the export of fundamentalist religious ideology in books and pamphlets that advocate the suppression of women’s rights, hatred for non-Muslims and the execution of lapsed MuslimsApplause

His intervention will further destabilise the course of the Saudi state visit, which started badly when King Abdullah criticised Britain’s record on fighting al-Qaeda terrorism.

Mr Cameron will point to a study by the Policy Exchange think-tank that found extremist Saudi material at mosques in London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester. He will also refer to a report by Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, his security adviser, that highlighted the problem of the spread of Saudi fundamentalism. She said in July that the Saudi Government had cracked down on al-Qaeda but “has not yet stopped its religious establishment from exporting extremism, intolerance and Wahhabi ideology across the world”.

AWO:

Given that the first lady wore a headscarf when she visited a Jewish holy site in Jerusalem and a mantilla when she met with Pope Benedict XVI, we asked if Bush will be wearing some sort of abaya while she’s in Saudi Arabia. “No,” Sally McDonough, the first lady’s spokeswoman, tells USA TODAY’s David Jackson, adding: “they do not expect nor encourage it” of Western visitors.
Condoleezza Rice and Madeleine Albright didn’t wear head coverings when they visited Riyadh on official business, according to the photographs in our archive.
Update at 12:45 p.m. ET: McDonough says they have a nuanced policy when it comes to women who are visiting Saudi Arabia as part of the first lady’s delegation.
According to our team, during any activities on your own time – going to the mall, going out of the hotel for dinner, etc – women need to follow Saudi law and wear an Abaya. During official meetings, it is not necessary,” she writes in an e-mail to USA TODAY. “As per guidance from Embassy on the ground, as members of the official traveling party, we will not need to wear any head scarves or abayas at any point.”

World's going nuts, Pro-lifer attacked, India's sex-selective abortions and new terrorist attack, Moroccan Islamists,Children's forced work in Haiti, Iranian new bombs, religious persecution in China and Uzbekistan, Musharraf, H. Clinton's on terrorism and some Catholic news

Hmm, these are the kind of news that make me vomit. How on earth people can be sooooo brute???? I’m going to name this kind of news “World’s going nuts” 😡

A security video from an apartment hallway shows at least 10 witnesses ignored a woman’s cries for help for more than an hour as a man beat and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors in Minnesota said.

The surveillance video clearly showed men and women looking out their apartment doors or starting to walk down the hallway before retreating as the woman was assaulted for nearly 90 minutes, police spokesman Tom Walsh said.

Police said they responded to a call of drunken behavior and found Somali immigrant Rage Ibrahim, 25, and a woman lying unconscious in the hallway early Tuesday. The woman’s clothing had been pulled up and she had fresh scratches on her face and blood on her thigh, according to the criminal complaint.

Ibrahim says he is innocent and that the incident was a misunderstanding, according to Omar Jamal, the executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, who spoke on Ibrahim’s behalf.

Ibrahim says he is innocent and that the incident was a misunderstanding“. Yeah, right. And I believe that.

More about this here: It should be noted that this Jamal slug was convicted of lying to immigration officials and should have already been deported. Law was not fulfilled and a woman was attacked. The every-day’s tale… 😡

And father of 7-Year-Old Boy accused of biting Son’s Toes. He bited his son “hard enough to cause deep bruising and crack his toenails“. My goodness, the world is going nuts… 😡

From Life Site.Net:

A peaceful pro-life witness was violently assaulted outside an abortion site on Tuesday. Police responded late to his 911 after he was beaten by an unknown visitor to the clinic.
Early on Tuesday morning August 21, three Rockford pro-lifers-Ken Plez, Pat Brady and Kevin Rilott-were praying quietly in front of the Northern Illinois Women’s Center (abortuary) for an end to abortion. A large white truck pulled into the clinic parking lot, and without setting foot on the clinic property, Rilott approached and tried to talk to the people inside.
In a detailed account of the event Rilott described how the pro-choice man got out of his truck and approached him, saying, “You shouldn’t be here, you’re upsetting my wife.” He then began to hit Rilott in the chest, ribs, and stomach. Rilott did not strike back at the man, but managed to call 911. As he was being beaten, he begged for immediate police assistance.
He told his pro-abortion attacker that the police were on the way, but the man said he didn’t care. The assaulter also said that “after he bonded out” he would come back and get him. After breaking Rilott’s sign, the man then went into the abortion clinic.

In India, sex-selective abortions are rocketing. The reason?

A large portion of the Indian population believes that male children enable families to survive and ensure that their parents will be taken care of. Female children are considered a burden for whom parents will have to shell out expensive dowries, which leads many to elect to abort them.

On the other hand, a 2001 census revealed that there were 927 girls for every 1000 boys among children younger than age 7, as opposed to 945 in 1991. Last month, police discovered thirty bags full of aborted and newborn babies in a well near a clinic in eastern India.

Meanwhile, a huge explosion in India has killed at least 44 people. According to CNN, “militants” were responsible for it:

“These are things that will not be openly discussed … we can comment when the investigation is complete,” Home Secretary Shivraj Patil said at a news conference in Hyderabad.

In earlier news conferences, local officials placed the blame squarely on Islamic militants.

Available information points to Pakistani and Bangladeshi groups being behind the blasts,” Y.S.R. Reddy, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh state told reporters. The minister earlier said “this is definitely terrorist activity,” and urged everyone to stay calm.

Moroccan Islamists support pragmatism (well they are going to present themselves to the elections, so it’s better for them to seem moderate. Link in Spanish):

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD), the main Islamist party in the oposition, is going to present a program in which the daily worries of the voters will be the first objective instead of religion in the campaign for the parliamentary elections of September 7th, according to its leader.

Experts consider it’s possible the party will obtain more MPs and could be the main group in an election where more than 30 parties will concur to.

Observers see the result as a measure of the level of disillusion with the liberal and laic elites who have been in charge in Morocco for the last 50 years.

The Parliament only has limited powers in the North African country, where the King Mohammed VIth, controlls all the main sectors from the Army to the religious affairs, and can name the Prime Minister and “veto” laws.

Some analysts say that in any case the elections will help to revitalise some aspects of the body of the governing elite.

“Our agenda is inspired without doubt in our Islamic surrounding, but in an Islamic surrounding linked to the voters’ needs”, told Reuters the PJD’s leader, Abdelilah Benkiran.

[…] “Frankly, the citizens won’t vote for us if we go to the elections to impose the veil on women, the bears on men and to all the people to make them go to the mosque”, he added.

Just let them take power. After four or five years, we speak about this.

About children abuse: Kids forced into domestic servitude in Haiti:

Evans Antoine wakes at 7 a.m. and dusts himself off from his night on the floor. While other children in his middle-class neighborhood overlooking the Haitian capital head to school, the 15-year-old puts on toeless sneakers and gets to work washing dishes, scrubbing floors and running errands at the market. He also works in the yard and sometimes wields a scythe in the family’s fields.

There is little reward for his toil, except for food and a roof over his head. And often, the quality of his work isn’t good enough; his caretakers sometimes hit him with a switch or slap him on the back of the scalp. Once they tied his hands and put a bag over his head before beating him with a stick.

This has been his life for the past three years.

Read it all. Specially interesting is this paragraph: “Haiti revolted against French colonial rule and became the first “black republic” in 1804. With newly emancipated slaves in power, it also became the first nation to outlaw slavery. Dependent on coffee and sugar, however, Haiti kept the plantation system after the revolution, requiring “mandatory labor” of many citizens. The masters were no longer white, but working conditions improved only marginally“.

The proof that changes sometimes don’t change anything really. Just another people step on charge.

More news from Iran: as ever not very promising:

Iran vowed Sunday to use a new 2,000-pound “smart” bomb against its enemies and unveiled mass production of the new weapon, state television reported.

The government first announced development of the long-range guided bomb Thursday, saying it could be deployed by the country’s aging U.S.-made F-4 and F-5 fighter jets.

“We will use these (bombs) against our enemies when the time comes,” Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said on state television Sunday.

Iran often announces new weapons for its arsenal, but the United States maintains that while the Islamic Republic has made some strides, many of these statements are exaggerations.

In China they continue with their magnificent view of Human Rights:

A prominent bishop of the underground Catholic Church in China was arrested on August 23, apparently to prevent him from distributing the Pope’s message to the Church in China.

Bishop Jia Zhiguo of the Zheng Ding diocese was taken into custody on Thursday morning, the US-based Cardinal Kung Foundation reports.

The bishop’s arrest came after several days of tight surveillance in his residence. The Cardinal Kung Foundation reports that visitors to the bishop’s home were held and interrogated by police before being released.

But religious persecution does not only exist in China. In Uzbekistan:

When seven police officers with a video camera raided his home on Sunday morning, 29 July, Nikolai Zulfikarov was away. But this did not stop prosecutors launching a criminal case to punish him for “illegally” organizing a religious community, with a possible sentence of five years’ imprisonment. The small Baptist congregation that meets in his home in the eastern Namangan Region refuses on principle to apply for state registration. One local Baptist told Forum 18 News Service that prosecutors wanted to sentence Zulfikarov immediately, but now there is “total silence”. He added that “it is not clear if this means they will abandon the attempt or if they are moving stealthily behind the scenes”.

More worrying news for Musharraf:

Another defeat for President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan’s Supreme Court has narrowed the options for the U.S.-allied military leader as he seeks to extend his rule.

Thursday’s ruling that his arch rival, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whom Musharraf ousted in a 1999 coup, can return from exile leaves the general vulnerable at home and abroad ahead of crucial elections.

Talks with another ex-prime minister on a pact that would keep Musharraf in office are proving tough. And U.S. impatience with his failure to eliminate Taliban and al-Qaida strongholds near the Afghan border is growing.

Driven by a clamor for the restoration of democracy, the military-led government has responded with calls for national reconciliation.

But Musharraf “is hardly talking from a position of strength,” the Dawn newspaper said in a weekend editorial. Talks with his opponents “must have a one-point agenda: a truly free and fair general election.”

In Brussels they are forbidding Sept 11th’s demonstration against Islamic terrorism, and yet they are letting a Pro-Hizbullah group’s demonstration:

The Arab-European League (AEL), a pro-Hezbollah organization of Arab immigrants in Belgium and the Netherlands, is rallying its members to march in Brussels on 11 September “against Islamophobia and racism in Europe.” The AEL demonstration is a response to the request by the Danish-British-German organization Stop the Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) for permission to demonstrate on 9/11 in front of the European Union’s buildings in Brussels against the introduction of Sharia laws in Europe.

Two weeks ago the SIOE demonstration was banned by Freddy Thielemans, the mayor of Brussels. According to Mr Thielemans the SIOE demonstration is a criminal offence because it “incite[s] to discrimination and hatred, which we usually call racism and xenophobia. [This] is forbidden by a considerable number of international treaties and is punished by our penal laws and by the European legislation.”

Of course, Hizbullah’s members are peaceful, respectful of other people’s lifes and caring. As I said, the world’s going nuts…

Hillary Clinton’s remarks about terrorism are just very similar to the ones made by James Clayburn about Iraq:

“There are circumstances beyond our control, and I think I am better able to handle things I have no control over,” she said. “It’s a horrible prospect to ask yourself ‘What if? What if?’ But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world,” she said. “So I think I’m the best of the Democrats to deal with that as well.”

Nigeria: From Gateway Pundit: Angry Muslim Mob Storms Prison to Lynch Homosexuals. A prison guard has been injured. Will all the Gay Pride’s organisers say something about this? Eehh, no, that’s only said if they are Christian and preferably Catholics the ones who critisize the right to marry. That is an offense grade A. But if fundamentalist Muslims do it, ehh, welll, then it’s only an offense grade Z, at the most…

More about HuT and the Global Caliphate: Hyscience. And it’s not the only group claiming for it: specially in Internet, this kind of ideas are proliferating.

And now for some Catholic news:

Pope Benedict XVI explains last Sunday’s Gospel:

The way to eternal life is narrow because it is demanding, requires commitment and denial of one’s own selfishness, Pope Benedict XVI said today in his Sunday angelus address. He was referring to today’s Gospel in which Jesus calls on his followers to strive to enter the “‘narrow gate’ to eternal life, because many shall seek to enter in, and shall not be able”.

“What does the ‘narrow gate’ mean?”, the Pope asked pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. “Why do many not succeed in entering through it? Is the way reserved for just a few elect?”

The Pope said it is often a trap and a temptation to interpret this passage as a reference to religious practice as a source of privilege or security. But in reality, “the message of Christ is actually quite the opposite”, the Pope explained. “All can enter eternal life, but for everyone, the door is narrow. They are not privileged. The path to the eternal life is open to all, but it is narrow because it’s demanding, asks for commitment, abnegation, and the mortification of selfishness”.

As a result of the stress and lack of tranquility of modern life:

More and more Italians, tired from the routine and noise of the city, are opting to spend their vacations in monasteries and convents that offer them a time of reflection and contact with nature.

Many religious communities—even cloistered convents–have opened their doors to young people and families to join in their daily life of prayer and activities, as well as to listen to their concerns and provide them spiritual guidance.

I think I’m going to book a holiday like that… when I have time for it! 😆

Ban Ki-Moon: The main cause of Darfur problems is…

Daimnation!: The root cause of the violence in Darfur

According to the new UN Secretary, it’s all about global warming [excerpts out of sequence]:Two decades ago, the rains in southern Sudan began to fail. According to U.N. statistics, average precipitation has declined some 40 percent since the early 1980s. Scientists at first considered this to be an unfortunate quirk of nature. But subsequent investigation found that it coincided with a rise in temperatures of the Indian Ocean, disrupting seasonal monsoons. This suggests that the drying of sub-Saharan Africa derives, to some degree, from man-made global warming.

It is no accident that the violence in Darfur erupted during the drought. Until then, Arab nomadic herders had lived amicably with settled farmers. A recent Atlantic Monthly article by Stephan Faris describes how black farmers would welcome herders as they crisscrossed the land, grazing their camels and sharing wells. But once the rains stopped, farmers fenced their land for fear it would be ruined by the passing herds. For the first time in memory, there was no longer enough food and water for all. Fighting broke out. By 2003, it evolved into the full-fledged tragedy we witness today…

At this point, nothing surprises me about this man at all. But Darfur conflict is mainly an ethnic and religious conflict in which the Government, arming and unleashing the Janjaweed militias, has caused an ethnic and religious cleasing of, firstly, the non-Muslims (Christians and Animists) and of the Black Muslims, afterwards, when the first ones were virtually exterminated. Of course, the huge sea of oil under Darfurian soil has also have something to do with it, specially for China, who is aggresively exploiting it. Hmm, no more blood for petrol!! Eeh, no, it’s China, all for the people…

But of course, for Ban Ki-Moon, the most important reason of all, is the climate change induced, to some extent, by man. Of course, the extent of this man’s influence is not even measured…

Alex de Waal is one of the most important experts on the Horn of Africa: Chasing Ghosts: Alex de Waal on the rise and fall of militant Islam in the Horn of Africa (2005):

Khartoum had been saved from certain military defeat when its adversaries fell out among themselves. In May 1998, Eritrea and Ethiopia went to war over their disputed border, and a couple of months later Ugandan and Rwandan troops fought each other in the occupied Congolese city of Kisangani. As the attempt to found an Islamic state was running into the sand, so was the rival left-wing project of revolutionary militarism. The guerrillas-turned-governments in the four ‘frontline states’ were, like the Sudanese leaders, concerned only with staying in power.

This parallel is more than a neat coincidence. The radical Islamists and their regional enemies shared ideological fervour and organisational discipline. Both believed that enduring problems of state and society could be overcome by revolutionary change; and, as this failed, both reverted to simple power politics. Like other political creeds, jihadist Islamism is shaped by the contours of local politics – and sometimes it vanishes into the landscape.

The demise of grand ideology in the Horn did not mean the end of violence or militancy. Various ideologies have emerged from the ruins of the Islamic state project. Most are regional or tribal. In Darfur and Chad, Arab supremacism took over. Leaders of the infamous Janjawiid militia adhere to the philosophy of Qoreish, according to which the lineal descendants of the Prophet Muhammad and his Qoreish tribe are entitled to rule Muslim lands. This supposedly gives the Arabic-speaking Saharan Bedouin of the Juhayna confederation the right to dominate all the land between the Nile and Lake Chad. While US Special Forces chase a handful of jihadists in the mountains of the central Sahara, they have overlooked this vicious and archaic ideology, which has spread far more havoc just a few miles to the south.

Jihad in Sudan? What Jihad in Sudan? by Robert Spencer – HUMAN EVENTS

For a decade Khartoum has waged what the regime itself calls a jihad against Christians and tribalists in the South. A 1992 fatwa issued by a group of pro-Khartoum Sudanese imams declared: “An insurgent who was previously a Muslim is now an apostate and a non-Muslim is a non-believer standing as a bulwark against the spread of Islam, and Islam has granted the freedom of killing both of them.” This allowed for the murder of Christians and animists in the south; now it has been turned against the Muslims of Darfur, whose Islam doesn’t measure up to Khartoum’s hardline standards. Yet Annan has never acknowledged that what is going on in Sudan is a jihad. And this is just one manifestation of the by-now inescapable fact that the United Nations is damaged beyond repair. The Islamic states maintain an unbreakable solidarity. The only exception to their unwillingness to condemn other Muslim states came when Saddam Hussein’s Iraq attacked Kuwait.Meanwhile, the Europeans and Chinese have oil interests in Sudan that dovetail nicely at the UN with the Islamic bloc’s determination to repel any criticism. France, the most energetic opponent of UN sanctions against the Khartoum regime, is heavily invested in Sudan through its oil giant ElfTotal.

The emperor has no clothes, but Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Physicians for Human Rights and
Oxfam are still paying enthusiastic obeisance. A perusal of each of their websites demonstrates that they criticize the UN only with extreme reluctance and in the most muted tones. In a startling recrudescence of the old “white man’s burden” mentality, they tend to focus more anger at the United States and Western Europe for failing to stop killings than at the murderers themselves. And above all, they won’t describe the conflict as what it really is: a jihad, another example of the crying need for large-scale reform within Islam.

Well, Sarkozy has apparently changed the French ideas in this respect, firstly, calling for a Chinese intervention in the crisis, something very dificult to achieve considering the Chinese practices in Sudan. And secondly, by making Darfur, one of his priorities.

A cuadros me quedo…

“¿Perdone?

Islamic bycicles: the new strategy of Iran

Well, our beloved Ahmadinejad said that in Iran, “women’s rights are more respected than men’s”. That is why they are now issuing an “Islamic bycicle” for women:

Iran will make “Islamic bycicles for women, thought to hide the feminine forms by a cabin which would cover half of the body.
“This project lets fomentar the practice of sport by women”, said Elaheh Sofali, one of the women who are responsible of the project”, according to the Government’s newspaper.
Faezeh Hachémi, daughter of ax-Iranian President Rafsandjani, ex-responsible of the women’s Olympic sport, tried to develop cycling between women in the 90’s, but this decision did not have the hoped success because of the opposition of the conservative religious bodies.

Conservative? I guess the culprit is Aznar, again…

Kamangir has more about this, including this photo:
At the same time, the Iranian regime continues to crackdown on the feminist movement in Iran with no aid from feminists throughout the world.

Despite the constant harassment of its members, the Iranian feminist movement is growing and is alarming the government,” Reporters Without Borders said in a statement. “The Internet is now a battle-ground between these women, who are just demanding the same rights as men, and a regime that remains as rigid as ever.”

The series of arrests are an indication that the small progress that had been made under the former reformist president Mohammad Khatami is now being rolled back by his successor, the hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, since he was elected in 2005.

The Iranian police are also ramping up their inspections of women to ensure they are adhering to the Islamic dress code. The annual spring offensive to make sure women are covering up enough has been particularly strict this year. And the government in Tehran is now drafting a law to limit female students to half the places in college, instead of the 65 percent they currently occupy.

At the same time, Iran can be as close as 12 months away to gaining the ability to produce the nuclear bomb.

Iran has also jailed an Iranian-American journalist who converted from Islam to Judaism and also a top blogger, who is accused of … being a spy!

But the most outstanding measure of idiocy in Iran is that they are also arresting DOGS!! (here). And they are also confiscating cars for carrying the dog inside h/t Gateway Pundit.

Norwegian-Iranian Mamand Mamandy had a brutal meeting with police after drinking two beers while on holiday in Iran. He was sentenced to 130 lashes. This is the result:Hmm, yes,

Lastly, men and women will be separated at hospitals. h/t Stefania.

Iranian health minister Kamran Bagheri Lamkarani has presented a reform under which men and women would be divided in public hospitals under a new moralization campaign which kicked off last month. Under the new provisions, women would be treated only by female doctors and nurses and male patients would only be in contact with medics of the same gender. This follows a rigid interpretation of Sharia law which forbids physical contact between men and women.

A major problem with this change is the higher number of male medics compared to women, although 67 percent of medical students in Iran are today women. However, the ministry has said the change could be gradual.

The crisis of the Afghan illegal immigrants and refugees in Iran and Pakistan continues: experts consider that the return of 3 million people to Afghanistan can be disastrous. I ask myself: while the most part are good people who fled from Soviet war first and then from Taliban rule, how many of them are Talibans who are “pushed” now into Afghanistan to fight the UN mission?

French Presidential Elections 2007 Watch

Before 14:00: very high turnout at French elections: 34,11%. Le Salon Bleu:

A la même heure, ce taux avait été respectivement de 26,2%, de 29,6%, de 28,5% et de 30,2% lors des quatre précédents scrutins présidentiels de 2002, 1995, 1988 et 1981.

Yesterday cars were burned in Paris by … far-leftists. More about the burned cars here.
Mme. Royal said that if Sarkozy was elected, the streets would be full of violence. Of course she did not say who was going to make the violence. Mr. Sarkozy considers that “this is like saying: Vote for me, and everything would be peaceful or vote for Sarkozy and it would be the war. Mme Royal has insulted all the people who voted for me on the first round“. Interview with Sarkozy by Le Parisien.
Alarming news: Maybe John Kerry should have tried this approach. About the violence… 😉
Anyway, riot police has been deployed just in case… Sarkozy wins. And more than 3000 policemen are waiting also … just in case the same..

Anyone remembers something?? March 2004 Spanish elections perhaps?? “People surrounding Popular Party offices and calling their supporters murderers were exercing their freedom of expression”, Zapatero dixit.

Reuters: Sarkozy camp confident as French vote in election.

Now:

ExtremeCentre.org:

IHT: Sarkozy wins elections in France. 53-47.

His comfortable victory could give Sarkozy’s Union for a Popular Movement party
the momentum to win a majority in Parliament in June, cementing his power to
implement far-reaching reforms in Europe’s third-largest economy. He wants the
French to work more and pay lower taxes.

Well, just in case, all the votes have not been considered, so we will have to wait. Although the fact that Royal has recognised in a specch her defeat can be considered as a sign that this result could be the definite.

If Sarko wins, French singer Johny Halliday is going to sing in the victory’s celebration.

I love NYT. They are sooooo idiot that I laugh every time I read the news: Forget Who’ll Win in France. Change Is a Loser. Isn’t it lovely???

It was the French, after all, who first observed, “the more things change, the more they remain the same.”
“I have the impression that things will move, yes. But will France resemble Britain? No,” said Michel Winock, a French historian, referring obliquely to Margaret Thatcher’s 1980s showdown with British unions and the eventual economic boom her policies helped bring. “We have traditions, attitudes, an attachment to social welfare and, even if change is desirable, we won’t accept change overnight.”

Hmm, yes, well, if they have finally voted Sarkozy that means that even French traditions can change…
In ExtremeCentre.org one commenter writes this annecdote:

Haaretz told some months ago about the mistreatment that the Ségo’s speaker made to the representant of the Jews in France. When the representant of the Jews Council approached him, Julien Dray shouted at him: “You have sold your soul to the other side; we don’t want anything with you. Go back to your friend Sarkozy, that is your owner“. When the representant of the Jewish Council tried to reason with him, he went even more mad: “You’re going to pay for your unilateral joining. Ségolène is going to be the President and you’will need to pray to be received by her“. Nidra Poller mentions the incident here.

Juas, juas…
