For the xenophobic Plataforma per Catalunya (PxC), Badalona is a really interesting place. The extremist party has infiltrated in the districts, where the immigrant population is greater, to have some more votes. They are trying to exploit the neighbourhood’s dissatisfaction with the problems that are endemic there, giving speeches in which they attack foreigners and Islam. Although it’s not very visible yet, the party leadered by ex-leader of Fuerza Nueva (NOTE: Franco’s nostalgic guys) Josep Anglada has proposed polemic measures such as abrogating subsidies for immigrants, retiring any scholarships for immigrants’ sons and that Moroccan and Pakistani consulates pay for the expenses that, according to PxC, are costing to the city people from those nationalities in Badalona. The Platform opened in the city, Barcelona and L’Hospitalet on March. The first goal of this party is to take part in the Autonomic Community’s elections on 2010 and then in the local elections on 2011. Anyway, the party is watching a good climate for their radical message in Badalona’s outskirts. “Immigration is suffered in those areas and those places are so devastated that we can have losts of votes“, says the delegate of PxC in Badalona, Carles Francisoud. The most important places where they are working are Sant Roc, Artigues, La Salut and Llefià, outskirts where the 34,000 foreigners that live there make up to 20% or 30% of the population. “If there is a problem here between the Pakistanis and the gypsy community, we are going to have a war because the illegals have entered here massively“, says Francisoud, who was sentenced in the mid-80s for several terrorist attacks made by ultra-far-right organization Milicia Catalana. The Platform, who has now 17 councilmen in cities like Vic, Manlleu or Manresa, is not hiding that they want to take the votes that were won by PP (center-right) in 2007 local elections, in which PP introduced a very hard-line discourse against illegals. The City’s Fellowship’s Councilman, the Convergencia i Unió (Catalan Nationalists – Conservatives) Josep Pera, considers the PP’s politians are responsible of this party having arrived there: “They have attracted them with their campaigns, who are giving a bad name to Badalona“. On the other hand, Badalona PP’s President, Xavier García Albiol, opines that PxC are no more than a “residual and folk group” and doesn’t think they are going to have a very great impact on the local elections, where the PP is seeing a continued growth: “We know that our only rival here is the Catalonian Socialist Party, who has been governing this town for the last 30 years, and that Badalona’s first problem is the degradation of some districts after the uncontrolled immigration“. The Platform is planning to organize a protest next September or October, against the next opening of a Muslim prayer room in the Artigues’ district. They are announcing it as “the more important anti-mosque demonstration held in Catalonia” and they are pretending to have more than 1,000 people, a number they have already reached in the demonstration against other prayer room in Premià de Mar held on 2002, in which some riots and security problems took place. The party’s supporters and the board of directors will attend it. This possible demonstration, which has maintained meetings with the entity which collected some signatures against a prayer room against which PP was also positioned, has not been well-received in the area. The President of the Neighbours’ Association Ángel Vendrell explained “It’s going to benefit no one. They can heat up the suspicions, which were already nearly forgotten“. Around 1,800 Muslims live in Artigues. They pray in the Camarón de San Roc Square. Although the second prayer room in Badalon will open soon, the hundreds of believers will continue to prostate themselves in the street on the sacred day for Islam to prevent the overpopulation in the ground floor from Santiago St., which is waiting for the license that will permit the conditioning of the rooms, with a total capacity of 50 people. According to the Major’s office, this Ramadan (which begins next Aug 22nd) will be used. The official opening with all the licenses will be held in October. Artigues’ Pakistani community, who had already protested against PP’s campaign opposed to this same prayer room, has denied that this will deteriorate the relations within the neighbourhood. Their speaker, Saidullah Khan, said “racism isn’t suddently born, they are not going to find any answer to their demonstrations“. Umair Dar, a young social worker who is fighting the effects that the economic crisis has in his fellow countrymen, told us that he never has seen any PxC’s supporters in the area: “They are possessed by Islamophobia. Before building a war camp, they should come here and we’ll find a solution“. Francisoud warns that the party he is representing, will prevent that “more immigrants get registered in the city and more mosques are built”. He adds that, if more mosques are to be built, they “should be in industrial estates”. “They aren’t asking that for schools or churches. Why? This is barbarity”, protests Muhammad Nawaz, a member of the Camí de la Pau (Path of Peace -Cat-), the Islamic organization settled in Barcelona’s Raval and owner of the new prayer room in Badalona. Their anti-immigration rethoric that is supported by PxC since it was born in 2002 has driven the party to form alliances with other European far-right parties, such as French National Front, Italian North League or German Neo-Nazi NDP. Till this day, the more known event of this party has been Anglada’s participation in a neighbours’ one against insecurity and the lack of social benefits in the La Salut’s district, an event in which Albiol also took part. In the end of the demonstration, in which some quarrel took place between a PP supporter and the members of PxC, Anglada stated to this newspaper that he felt as a foreigner himself, when he took a walk by Badalona and added that he wants his party to obtain between “two and four town councillors” in the local elections.
A job, a better life, live with their relatives… The reasons that brought to Vitoria the 5,000 Muslims that live nowadays in the city are now part of their past. Some of the obstacles that they met when they arrived at the city exist till today. One of those obstacles is the non-existence in Vitoria of a mkbara, or Arab cemetery adapted to the rituals of this community, an space reclaimed for some years now and about what the Major’s office didn’t reach any agreement some years ago. But this autumn its construction will be considered again.
The recent inauguration of a Muslim cemetery in Derio (opened in Oct, 2008 inside the Christian cemetery already built) seems to have given this project the support it needed. “As we suceeded in Bilbao, Vitoria’s Major’s office contacted us to see what we could do here”, the President of the Islamic Communities Union in the Basque Country, Ahmed El Hanafy explains. It seems that some members of this association (they want one person per mosque –the city has five- to attend each meeting) and city representatives will meet again to begin the negotiations related to the new cemetery.
«Very grateful»
The next meeting could end a debate whose last chapter began in 2004. The proposal of setting an area for Islamist (islamistas in the original) burials, was made then by the city’s Basque Nationalist Party group. They picked up a demand made by the Islamic community in the city who were asking for an specific area near El Salvador. “It could be an exclusive area or being located inside the cementery”, explains now El Hanafy. That first petition seemed to have all the support it needed to succeed because Basque Government just had passed a regulation that had removed all the requirements of burial requirements, regarding health and enviromental related issues, that allowed to build the cemetery. All the political parties, except PP (center-right) supported the idea, but it wasn’t built in the end.
The first conversations regarding this cemetery were held in the late 90’s, when the Vitorian Major’s office destined 1,000 square meters in El Salvador for this use. Two years later the debate was again held, but again the cemetery wasn’t built. “We are very grateful to see that the Major’s office had again shown interest in this project”, says the responsible of the Islamic Communities’ Union of the Basque Country, although he adds that there are things to discuss about, like “how, where, how much and when”.
“We would like to have more land than in Bilbao“, where around 300 corpses can be buried in around 450 square meters. The new cemetery would allow the believers to save the huge costs of sending the corpses back to their countries of origin (around €4,000 if they have to send it to Morocco or more than 6,000 if they have to send to, for example, Senegal. “We are not speaking about immigrants, but of the new generations, of Vitorian Muslims who want to be buried according to Islamic rituals“, says El Hanafy.

So, Spanish Government is going to ask Venezuelan Ambassador about the expulsion, but Elena Valenciano, Socialist responsible for Foreign Affairs has already said that “he did not fulfill the code of behaviour for international observers, because they are only charged with making a report after the elections but not prior to them“. So they can’t caution if there is a real danger to the impartiality of the elections, they can only speak when everything is done and nothing can be done about it.
Luis Herrero has stated after his expulsion that he was not as an “observer” but as an invited guest from the opposition, and, as such, with full capacity to give an opinion about what is happening there. He also added that no one from Spanish Embassy has gone to support Carlos Iturgáiz and the rest of PP’s MEPs who are also in Venezuela.
Meanwhile, López Istúriz, another PP’s MEP, considers that the statements made by Elena Valenciano “belongs really to a political komissar”, and that the measure they should have taken was “to write a protest note, not the expulsion, if they felt offended by his words”.
Zapatero’s Government (again) places itself with tyrants…

So after being since March 9th, without even speaking about the news which have been going on these past days, Rajoy emerges from the shadows and points out to Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, a young prepared woman, as PP speaker in Congress. But you know, for me this is not a question of being a woman or a man, of being old or young. It’s a question of being convinced of what you do and being tough defending it. It’s not easy, but nobody is going to defend it for you.
This is a job of the utmost responsibility that implies you must have enough experience to cope with it, without doubting or feeling sorry for what you are. What happens? That she is not perceived as tough, only as “prepared” and “very inclined to dialogue”, two things that opposition these days should be very cautious to consider: the Government is formed in general by stupid unprepared people who have left us glorious phrases over the last term. And to dialogue you must be first convinced about what you defend, something Ms. Soraya is not: she wants PP to be a center party, something a lot of us do not agree with.
If you are known by your antagonists, then it’s curious that the people who should be hers are so happy with her appointment. From LD:
El Pais’s main opinion article considers that the appointment of Soraya is the proof of a “prudente aggiornamento”. It also adds that she is “an expert in Autonomic matters, not only belongs to a new political generation, but only has the support of her good knowledge of law and a easy attitude which are recognised by all the people which negotiate with her the reforms of the Statutes of Autonomy pased in the last term”.
The main page of the Zapatero’s friend, Público, can’t be more meaningful. Over a photo of Alonso and Soraya, there is the title: “First target: bury the confrontation”. This newspaper identifies the confrontation with the work in defense of the principles of PP made by the last speaker, Zaplana, in the last term. They see a gesture of moderation and define Soraya as “diplomatic but firm, having a great memory and as an expert in bypassing the difficult problems using argumentos”.
Also Socialists are very happy with her appointment. Their new Congress speaker, José Antonio Alonso thinks that they are going to “get on well” and that they are going to “create the necessary conditions to arrive to consensus on counter-terrorism policy, foreign policy, security and common defense”.
Even the Catalan Government has celebrated the news. Catalan Republican Left’s speaker in Congress, Joan Ridao, and the elected MP of Catalan Left-Greens, Joan Herrera, celebrated as a “good news”that the new speaker of Congress has that “more inclined to dialogue profile” that the last one, Eduardo Zaplana.
The problem with her is that, not only all the undersigners of the Tinell Pact (that pact that excluded Popular Party nearly from all parlamentary life) are very happy about her, but that I don’t think she has the courage or the tough ways to confront what we have ahead. I don’t think Spain needs someone we have to wait to see if she does it OK. Spain needs someone who has the guts to confront the rest of the parties, because in most subjects (censorship in Internet, SGAE’s canon on digital devices, terrorism, justice, immigration…) PP is alone. Spain doesn’t have time.
And since the first time, she has not confronted people who has spoken to her in a very unrespectful way. It’s known here that important journalists Pedro J. Ramírez (El Mundo) and Federico Jiménez Losantos (COPE) want to influence PP, just as mainly PRISA has done with PSOE. And they are not happy with the appointment. Me neither. But what you cannot ask in the first interview with someone is “Have you reproduced yourself yet?”. That is not only a very bad taste question, it’s clearly a question he wouldn’t have asked a man or a middle-aged woman.
And she just answered the question. No, that’s not a way to treat such people. You should defend yourself and show you have the qualities for the job.
The same happens with the ideology: there are several “ideologues” who want to convince people that in Spain there are only far-rightists or centered people. That right-wingers, that is, conservative or moderate conservative don’t exist. Well, this is going to disappoint you but WE exist (I am more or less a wild-born conservative, that is, do you want me to change my views? Well, give me rational reasons for that or just get off to bore in another place). And no, people like me don’t want Franco (or his ideological sons) to come back. We don’t want Catholicism to be the official religion. And we don’t eat little children. We support freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, freedom of criticism against power and separation of Church and State, although considering that the work that the Catholic Church does regarding security services is very important and must be considered by the State, who saves lots of money with it. But hey, that does not mean people should worship the Church, just consider it as another NGO with much less costs for society and State. In my case, I’m for the self-financed Church, but its earnings would go first for Catholics and supporters, rest of it for charity. Because we are brothers but not idiots.
Well, most conservatives have voted PP as there is no other party with reasonable ideas (no, please, AES or similar are NOT reasonable for me…) to vote for. I voted as I wrote here, mainly because I didn’t like Zapatero and was fearing the consequences for freedom of expression his new term was going to bring.
In fact it has already brought them: a supposedly anti-racist NGO Movement against intolerance has asked the Government to see if they can shut several webs and blogs because they were listed in an anti-immigration website deemed as “racist and far-right”. The problem is that the authors of those blogs listed weren’t even aware their blogs were listed there and the NGO didn’t even take the time to read all the blogs they were -and are- asking to shut. Now they have even erased some of them –also here-, while keeping others listed, and menacing them with legal actions because of the “Statements that are made against the NGO and its president”. Of course, what are the bloggers going to say about them? And what would PP say against this kind of censorship without even having read the contents of the web? Just give them time: they have to learn (both: PP and the NGO) what the blogosphere is about first…
****
Bien, bien…).
Any time I found someone writing in English about what I want to write it’s a pleasure… even if the subject is so disagreeable and dispicable as is the Mari Luz case. John, the editor of Iberian Notes, has written about it in his blog: I wouldn’t have said this better.
“The big news in Spain is the Mari Luz case. Down in Huelva some sex pervert kidnapped and murdered a little girl named Mari Luz back in January, and they just found her body a few days ago. The perv has been arrested, and here’s the fun part: he had two prior convictions for child sexual abuse, once on his own daughter, and they never bothered actually putting him in jail.
The judiciary is being seriously questioned over this one, since the pervert never should have been anywhere near this child. Jail is made for sick bastards who go around sexually abusing kids, not for people who smoke pot or write bad checks. Spain, by the way, does not have a register of sex offenders, though it does have one of woman-beaters, and there is no law requiring that people be informed if a sex offender is living in their neighborhood, either.
Mari Luz was from a gypsy family that is integrated into society, while the perv seems to be a lower-class payo. The Huelva gypsies are understandably very angry, and they’ve tried to lynch both the perv and one of his brothers (who is almost certainly innocent, though the perv’s wife might have helped him cover up the crime).
This guy would be a clear death penalty candidate in the US, and I’d have no problem voting for it if I were on the jury.”
Really the people here are very angry about this, as you can imagine. But above all, as John points out before, of course, the most angry of all is the father of the little girl, who has announced legal actions against the responsibles and has asked “for responsibilities, specially political ones”. He has also asked the Minister of Justice, Bermejo, to give his opinion about the case. And understandably, he has asked for the Penal Code to be changed and the pedophiles be in prison for life. Even if that’s something that a lot of people here would support (the pedophiles are not in most cases reinserted or resocialized), I don’t think it would even get to parliament as political correctness is a value here.
Popular Party has asked the Government to accept the responsibility of the people in charge of the case and has announced some measures. I am anxious to see what measures are they considering for this case, specially because this is the first time they open their mouths after losing the elections and being more worried about the seat under their asses than about Spanish future.
Things are getting even more complicated after the so-depedent from Socialist Government newspaper, El País, has published that the Judge’s office responsible of the process, was investigated last November without detecting any irregularities. As the investigating office depends directly from the General Council of the Judicial Power, the investigation will also have to say if that service wasn’t working fine and where its error was.
Anyway, El Mundo has published that in that same investigation there were detected some “little” unjustified delays in the Judge’s way of handling the cases. And that the same Judge was fined in 1995 for unjustified delays in another case of another minor’s mistreatment.
AS I wrote on Sunday, Socialists won because of the vote of leftist radicals, both from United Left (communists, they lose 3 out of 5 seats in Congress) and the Nationalists from both Catalan Republican Left (lose 5 out of 8 seats) and Basque Nationalist Party (lose one which is summed up by the Basque Socialists). In general they have not increased their votes apart from that change. This can boost to extraordinary heights the radicalization of a Government, in nearly all issues.
Brief prospect for Socialist policy in the next term:
Judicial Power: the control over judiciary is going to be increased badly, leading to an accused partiality for the already partial Supreme Court Judges and the members of the General Council of the Judicial Power. We have seen this specially with the gay marriage issue: sanctions for judges who deemed it to be unconstitutional or for the ones who were not convinced of the constitutionality of the gay couples’ adopting children (it is a right for the minor to be adopted, not the other way round). But it can be seen also in the fact of the actual disparition of the popular action, a last resource to control legality for citizens when no one was left. This popular action has been deemed out of order if the Official Prosecutor does not maintain the accusation or if the private accusation is not personally damaged by the crime. Very used to pursue justice in anti-ETA processes, it has been deemed not contemplated for those cases, even when neither the Constitucion or the Criminal Process Law state that exemption.
Constitucional Tribunal: this is going to be another REAL issue. The awaited modification of its members is going to be done after an election where socialist radicalization is going to be the main issue considering the results. So you see the partitiality of the Tribunal is going to grow in an institution whose impartiality is not only a need of its own existence but a requirement to really ensure its “non-political/only juridical” real essence.
Religion: the attacks on the Catholic Church and the support of Islam (whose leaders asked expressely to vote for Socialism) are probably going to grow. For example, these last days we have come to know that Socialists and Al-Fatah made an agreement to mutually assess themselves in several issues. Also, the Socialist Government is going to pay with our taxes, a film named “Al Andalus” which tells a “story” between Reza, a Persian Muslim boy, Mirian, a Jewish girl and and an ex-guardsman of the Caliphate. The film has been called by the Spanish stupidest between stupidest FM Moratinos, a “project of enourmous importance for the Civilizations’ Alliance and a “very efficient tool” for it. Note there is no Christian as main role in the film: so where are the three cultures’ representatives if one of them -Christian- is substituted by an “ex-guardsman of the Caliphate”?
Abortion: the abortion is only non-punishable in Spain in three cases: rape, very grave genetic defects of the foetus and danger for physical and psychical health of the mother. It’s general knowledge that the last of the three causes is abused and perverted by doctors, who instead of considering the cases in which the mother IS really on these cases, they consider in it included every pregnant woman who is not on the other two cases and who arrives to the clinic to ask for an abortion. The scandals over abortion clinics have shown that even 8-month-old foetuses were being aborted and thrown into grinding machines to eliminate proofs. But high quantites of money were being paid to these clinics without, on the other hand, having ANY kind of post-abortion care for the mother of any pre-abortion information about other methods to avoid abortion. The support the Government has given to the clinics, instead of giving it to the pregnant women, is not a good sign, aggravated by the votes’ transfer from United Left, which has been supporting free abortion during the first three months, to the Socialists. Meanwhile the number of abortions in Spain has boosted, and the Government has released the figures later than other years for avoiding a lot of criticism just before the elections. Last news are, that the same clinics who were practising abortions to 8-month pregnant women, also practised abortions to 13-year-old girls.
Euthanasia: nowadays it’s totally forbidden in Spain. Anyway, the minister of Sciences, Bernat Soria, who has allegedly forged his CV including in it several non-existent aspects of his carreer life, has made it clear that he wants to discuss this matter (The euthanasia is a “failed subject” of Spanish society”). After receiving all the radical votes, I’m sure this is going to be one of the main issues in the next term, under the chapter of “social rights” that Zapatero mentioned on his first statement after winning the elections.
Internet: with all the considerations made (specially the control over the judiciary), it’s easy to see the highly bad influence the victory is going to have over freedom in Internet, the real Anti-Zapatero bastion. As being a blogger means you are not subjected to an editor, or to publicity or censorship issues and considering the practical inexistence of right-wing MSM, the right side of the blogosphere proved from the beginning that it was alive, was powerful and had clear ideas. Sites like Red Liberal, Red Anti-ZP, Red Popular or Red Blogs pro Rajoy and Internet forums like the dead GrupoRisa.com or Monclovitas proved that there were a lot of people with similar ideas and a common reject of Zapatero’s policy. And that is not convenient for Zapatero who knows that we are not easily influenced by Government’s propaganda.
Digital canon: This is another MAIN issue for the next term. Socialists have already imposed (though it can be even worse…) this tax in almost ALL digital memory devices JUST IN CASE you copied protected material (such as films, songs…), to pay for the “alleged” loss of benefits authors and creators have because of pirate copies. There are a lot of young people totally enraged by this mesaure because it considers any citizen as a culprit of piracy, while it’s not proved he has actually committed that crime. Secondy, because the tax is going to be payed to a private institution (SGAE – General Society of Authors and Editors), institution which has even been accused of illicit enrichment of public money (no, instead of showing all their benefits and possessions, it has criminally accused the people who was asking them to clarify certain aspects of them). Thirdly because the distribution of the benefits obtained by this tax are not going to be controlled even by Parliament. No presumption of innocence, no transparency and control: magnificent prospect.
Terrorism: this has been the most important issue in the last term. It is positive that Zapatero lied to Spanish people about the negotiation process with ETA. He said it himself in an interview that “he continued the negotiation with the terrorist group after the T4 Barajas terminal“, after denying in repeated occassions he had, and his Government had called “fascists” to all the people who did not agree with him. It is probable that the negotiation continues after the elections, even after the killing of PSOE ex-councilman Isaías Carrasco. The growth of the Socialists in the Basque country with the votes of the Basque Nationalists is sufficient to consider that as a REAL possibility. A referendum about Basque independence will take place in october, at the same time as the Basque Autonomous Community’s elections.
Independentism: not only Basque Country has a problem with hard-line independentists. In Catalonia, the socialists have obtained more votes thanks to the fall of Catalan Republican Left, a hardline independentist party, built upon the ashes of the terrorist group Terra Lliure, similar to ETA but which dissolved itself in the 1980s. This means the Socialists have radicalised their own positions so much that the hardline independentists are now voting for them, seeing them as much more useful for that purpose. The unilateral independence of Kosovo can be seen as a magnificent precedent for those purposes, even if the causes and the real situation of both of them differ.
Economy: the crisis is near, just ahead. The building sector has already collapsed and the elections’ result can even get the people to feel more fear about the future, stopping consumption in the near future. As families consumption is the main motor of Spanish economy, the crisis can be deepened. But the oil market pushes the prices up, so instead of lowering the prices, they get higher every day, with inflation reaching heights not known in several years. The crisis has also grow the unemployment rate, even if the way to count the number of unemployed was modified in order to lower it. We have also to consider the Socialist catastrophic energy policy which considers that nuclear power MUST be ended for “ecological” reasons, making Spain even more dependant from the oil and derived products’ market. But Zapatero, instead of fighting against the worsened economic numbers, has said that “people who questioned the economy were not patriots”, a stupid statement considering he once said that “his country was Freedom”.
Immigration: uncontrolled immigration is one of the worst problems here by now. An issue in which Socialists’ policy has been disastrous, after the policy of “papers for all”, which means residence papers for all, and which has consisted in the legalization of nearly 700.000 immigrants during the last term. This has produced a huge “calling effect” for immigrants, that every day arrive at Spanish coastal regions. Zapatero said that they were going to send back to his country in an interview by El Mundo newspaper this last Christmas. But this is extremelly difficult as they haven’t got any identification papers and normally the only country Spanish authorities know they have been before their arrival is Morocco. The latter denies any entry to illegal immigrants who have arrived to Spain, even if they have entered Spain from Moroccan coasts. But when Spanish authorities know where they have come from, the results are just the same disaster as ever. They have even been paid to return to their countries of origin.
Education: the first bad data in Spain about education is that it has been transferred to the Autonomous Communities, which have done a real bad work, choosing instead a modern, reflexive and cultivated education to build a paradise for ideological instruction to the major glory of leftism and “progressiveness”. But the sucessive Governements have failed to provide a permanent education system, which in general terms should apply to all Autonomous Communities. Instead of that, each change of Government means another change in education laws. The worst came with Zapatero and his “Education for Citizenship” which wants students to be formed in a Zapatero’s way of Franco “National spirit”.
Homosexualism: there are rumours that Zapatero wants the Parliament to pass a law against “homophobia”. As Aquiles wrote some weeks ago: This can be easily used as a clear menace for freedom of expression in Spain, and as a true weapon of Zapatero’s new police of thought to submit everyone which could not accept his idea of politics. He also would achieve to create the social desestabilization he is searching for.
I maybe forget some other things but these are the main internal problems. The international policy is inexistent, except the Alliance of Civilizations and other “imaginative” ideas, which serve only to spend huge quantities of money with no real good results.
But, considering the difficulty, there are some things we can say about the PP’s oposition. Voters want politicians who are active in thedefence of their ideas, people who are convinced about what they defend and people who are not afraid of acting as they believe it’s right.
The problem is that PP politicians are not tough enough when defending their ideas: they are absolutely linked to what “social analysts“, very bad “experts on communication” and other busybodies tell them to do. For example, a lot of young people were against the digital canon (more than a million) with a true revolution under the socialists’ noises who are firm supporters of it as they are paying the services of artists/singers and other pseudo-intelectuals, specialised in shameful and boring works of “art”, which systematically lose money which is paid by Spanish Public Budget. Well, PP has not even excluded the shameful MP Ms. Salmones from its lists who is a very stunt supporter of it, position which confronts the general of the party. And Mariano Rajoy mentioned this issue a little on the first debate and nothing on the second one.
The opposition must not only speak about ETA terrorism, an important issue but not the only one. There are a lot of issues in which it can attack Government’s decisions. But it seems they are afraid to do it, because of the pressure of the MSM and of the busibodies I referred to earkier, What they don’t get is that they are going to be hardly critisized whatever they do. Aznar precisely was not considering what the press told about him or what the polls suggested. This people are just the opposite.
But the situation can even get worse. Rajoy’s loss of the elections can mean than the most “progre”/leftist/stupid people can get to power in the PP. With all his defects, Rajoy has been someone not supportive of the most dangerous of that group: the Madrid’s Major Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón. Absolutely proud of himself and in love with power, he is very well perceived by the leftist establishment and voters (who would never vote for him anyway) as he has adopted some of the basic tenets of their commandments (for example, he was with Zapatero in the closing session of the I Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations).
I begin here the live-blogging of the General Spanish Elections 2008. We will have to wait for around two hours to reach the final results.
The preliminary polls indicate that Socialists are very near an absolute majority so they could get to the Government with no need to pact with any other political force… But those haven’t any basis on real data so we must wait till the first results.
20:48: First results will be available around 22:30 (Spanish time).
21:11: With 9% of the vote examined: 164 Socialists, 136 Popular Party according to the Interior Ministry’s website.
21:27: 172 PSOE, 144 PP.
21:31: 170: PSOE, 150: PP (33% considered).
21:44: 171: PSOE, 150:PP (38,70% of the vote considered).
21:57: 171: PSOE; 150:PP (56,9% of the vote considered).
There is a tendency of PSOE lowering its percentage of vote (at first it was 48%, now it’s 44,83%). And PP going up: at first it was 35%, now it’s 39,26%. But we can say that the Socialists have AGAIN won the elections…
22:06: 169: PSOE; 152: PP. (64,58% of the vote considered).
22:08: 168 PSOE (44,55%); 154: PP (39,53%) (67,08% of the vote considered).
22:11: 169 PSOE (44,47%) PP: 153 (39,57%) (69% of the vote considered).
22:14: 168 PSOE (44,41%) PP: 154 (39,65%) (71,45% of the vote considered).
22:19: 168 PSOE (44,34%); PP: 154 (39,69%) (73,33% of the vote considered).
Basically, Socialists are concentrating the votes from both Nationalists and Communists which have nearly disappeared from Parliament. This can boost the extremism of the Government: Zapatero can even get harder in next term…
22:23: 168 PSOE (44,22%); 154 PP (39,82%) (76,66% of the vote considered).
22:25: 168 PSOE (44,17%); 154 (39,88%) (78,27% of the vote considered).
22:28: 167 PSOE (44,11%); 155 (39,93%) (79,73% of the vote considered).
22:36: 168 PSOE (44,05%); 154 (40,00%) (82,15% of the vote considered).
22:42: 167 PSOE (43,96%); 155 (40,15%) (84,30% of the vote considered).
Zapatero wants to speak but he cannot do it because there are a lot of supporters who are delighted with the results… He has begun, at last, remembering the victims murdered by ETA and by the terrorism.. He says “they live in our memory”. High participation, which is a motive of happiness… And thanks to the citizens who have contributed to a clear victory of teh Socialist party. “Four years ago you asked me not to fail you… so I have made all the efforts not to fail you.
I will lead this country for all but thinking before all in those people that haven’t all.
I will lead to make reality the Women’s aspirations, the Youth’s hopes.
I will lead to make sure that Spain is compromised with peace.
Llamazares is asking the supporters to consider if he can continue or not. But he is not going to opt for re-election in United Left (communists).
23:01: 167 PSOE (43,84%); 155 PP (40,15%) (89,69% of the vote considered).
23:17: 168 PSOE (43,79%); 154 PP (40,14%) (92,36% of the vote considered).
0:06: 169 PSOE (43,72%) 154 PP (40,13%) (96,34% of the vote considered).
SO THE ANTI-ZAPATERO RESISTENCE CONTINUES…. IF HE DOES NOT INSTALL CENSORSHIP FOR ANTI-SOCIALISTS…
“No somos racistas.
***** Mariano Rajoy announced some days ago that, if he won 2008 elections here in Spain, he is going to oblige immigrants to sign a contract to fulfill Spanish laws and customs. The critics were huge in its momment. But today he has being accused in a leftist radio, Cadena Ser, from the same holding as world-known moonbat newspaper El Pais, of being the “Spanish Milosevic” and of “making statements as venomous as the Nazis’ gas”. As I said the other day, toughness has not being one of his characteristics… but he is considered a Nazi for asking to fulfill the law.
The measure has been critisized (reasonably indeed) because the Law should be fulfilled without any kind of other measures. But I believe it was needed that someone speaks out on immigration fully and without any fear of critics. Of course, he has not done that, but seeing the critics that his measure has arisen, I’m totally sure this is a good beginning. Now, they should continue by this path and not be distracted off it…
Last Thursday the electoral campaign officialy begun in Spain. And last night it was the first debate between Socialists’ candidate, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and PP’s candidate, Mariano Rajoy.
The first thing I am going to critisize of this debate is that it is only of the two main candidates. I really believe it would be a better idea to see all the candidates together debating. Of course, the PP (center-right) would have lots of critics there as, according to the Tinell Pact, the rest of the parties were to present a common opposition, not against the Government -Zapatero’s one- but against the PP, which was in the opposition. But the contrast would have been much interesting between the proposals of all the candidates.
What is the problem? That, considering the disenchantment of a very important part of Spanish society with the political parties, there are new parties which will be present at these elections. But these parties are having huge financial and MSM problems as there is a not-recognised boycott over them. Among them, we can actually name Unión de Progreso y Democracia (or Union of Progress and Democracy), leftist but with a strong Spanish nationalistic sentiment, which could be a real threat to Socialists in the next term.
So the MSM supporting the socialists are not even considering their existence. For example, Spanish blogger Maya discovered that world-known leftist newspaper EL Pais had censored both UPyD and Ciudadanos, another well-known recent born though older than UPyD, political party. Neither of those political parties appeared in its list about the ones who will be present at 9th March elections. Curiously, UPyD leader, Rosa Díez, was attacked some days ago when she was going to a conference in Madrid’s university, and his attackers, though known, had not been even questioned by the police. UPyD has only one problem: it is too much against the Catholic Church, specially another of its leaders, a moonbat called Fernando Savater. And I consider him a moonbat because while we have a real problem with Islamism, he continues to attack the Catholic Church as one of the two main problems Spain has now. The other is ETA.
ETA sent three letters to Spanish Government before announcing the ceasefire (truce) in March 2006 in which it told Zapatero they wanted to begin a “political negotiation” to resolve “the conflict between Spain and Euskal Herria”. The Government answered to all those letters without changing anything. Probably considering the importance of the opportunity, Zapatero did not inform them there could be no dialogue over political matters (Yeah, of course, and I am Muhamad Ali). The answers of the Government were made by writing or, sometimes, also verbally, but they were all sent to the Executive commitee of the terrorist gang, which was the signing partner.
Of course, this has not been very much on TV news… The Socialist propaganda is so important that there are people who consider Zapatero a hero for his caving in into ETA, and blames people like me, who are totally opposed to this negotiation, of “wanting that ETA kills more”, something utterly false, of course. I just don’t think that a terrorist gang can be defeated by doing what they want. They must see you are stronger and that you are more convinced that they are, about your values of justice and peace.
The treatment to women which Zapatero has made is, at least, disputable. Among other measures, Spanish parliament, after a Socialist proposal, passed a law, which supposedly was going to “support women”, but which in reality is an insult to women’s intelligence. The law intended to assure women-men’s equality by obliging all collegial institutions to ensure at least in a 40% of the seats there were women. So from the Parliament to the Board of Directors of Spanish firms, every institution should fulfill the famous “quota“. Of course, in a chauvinist country like Spain is, this ensures that, even the most brilliant woman, is under suspicion, if she is elected to such places: has she got there because she is brilliant enough or has she taken a much more brilliant man’s seat?
Last measure proposed is to “modify the traditional use of masculine forms in Spanish language, to represent women in educational, legal texts, communications and publications”. In Spanish, the words indicate the sex of the person which they are referred to (hermoso -masculine-, hermosa -femenine-, etc). But in plural, the masculine is preferred, and so, if you want to say “Your sons daughters are clever”, you would say “Tus hijos son listos”, considering that the masculine plural includes also the femenin form. Seeing something as that, as more important than fighting mistreatment at home (including the foreign women), illiteracy and female genital mutilation for example, gives you the measure of the intelligence of these feminists.
This has revived the debate between men-women antagonism, producing that mysogynists types have once more a reason to attack women (even if you are not for this measure, but you know, you’re nothing more than a woman… and so you must stay at home, raise your kids and not interfere in such macho-men labours) and feminist stupid types have a reason to consider that “the influence of women is growing” (you know, that brutes of men who treat us ever as a sexual object, well, now they are going to discover their “feminist side” blablabla). In both cases, there is the same error: the consideration of the other sex as an enemy, and not as a group of people with some differences but necessary to human interaction and relations, in yet another type of “classes clashes” which are so interesting to leftists in general.
On the other hand there is Mariano Rajoy, PP representative and, as most of you would know, the Aznar’s heir. The idea of the right here is that he is not fit to be a politician in the opposition while he would be a right Minister or even President if that possibility could happen. The reason for this is that he is not aggresive enough and doesn’t have the sufficient foul mood to kick in Zapatero’s ass with decission to kick in the target. He has, in general, not made great mistakes, except the horrible statement on the last Constitution day (last Dec 6th) when he assured Zapatero that he was not going to ask him to end ETA-Government’s negotiation. His support (at times) of the climate change foolish agenda can also be counted as another great mistake. And it’s that kind of indecission the one that can be, by large, the most damaging for his positions, specially after all the attacks against PP members –1, 2– (the last has been against some Councilmen of Madrid’s Autonomous Community’s Government, made by, among others, some Socialist councilmen and another one from United Left-communists-).
The situation is so stressed that the Government, using the SGAE -that’s one of the subjects I have to blog about in English-, has even censored a video in which some unknown citizens sing a song critisizing Zapatero and praising Rajoy:
And now, about yesterday’s debate: I couldn’t see it while it was happening, as in the end of each month I’m having exams and I am really stressed with them. But I have seen it afterwards and have also read the reactions. If you understand Spanish, Elentir has posted the video in its entirety.
The reactions have been basically, that if you are a right-winger, Mariano won because he was much more agressive (in fact, he even was able to give hope back to some bloggers, precisely because he was really tough in the debate) and if you are a left-winger, Zapatero won. The MSM, which are in an important number pro-Socialists, agree that Zapatero won just by a very little difference. The reason for this is that the propaganda machine of the Government has minimised the huge errors of Zapatero and has exaggerated the defects of Rajoy. What is more, La Vanguardia (Catalan pro-nationalist newspaper) reports that the debate was won by Rajoy but that Zapatero will get the benefit of it, as the “supposedly moderate” voters are not going to vote for Rajoy, only the extremists. But what I have seen these last months is that the real extremists are really campaigning heavily against PP and Rajoy, much heavier than against Zapatero, because Rajoy is accused of being “very soft” and of being a traitor to the real right. He has a really difficult position nowadays: nearly no favourable MSM and with aides sufficiently divided to give him advices which are nearly contradicting one another. It is curious then that all parties, except PP, for obvious reasons, instead of critizicing the Government, are critizicing the opposition (as if they would have also signed the Tinell Pact), something curious. But you know, Zapatero is much more threatening than Rajoy… and likes vengeance much more, so just play the punching ball, with the one who is not going to play it with you…
Is this legitimate? Yes, it is, of course it is. But in the present circumstances, the first target is to end the Zapatero’s era, and the only political party which happens to be positioned for that is PP. Does it mean I’m enchanted with them? No, I’m not: in politics, you must be tough, with very clear ideas and with a very thick skin to resist the critics. And for that you must be convinced of your ideas; if not, you’re not going to be convincing enough to convince others. But here, the toughness is considered equal to extremism, terms which have nothing to do with each other.
If the situation would be different, I would vote en blanco, that is, you vote but to no candidate to protest against the failure of our political parties’ system, which de facto, is a partitocracy, considering the huge power (and nearly total lack of control) of the political parties here. Although to be sincere this is a possibility which I haven’t discarded out completely. At home, by the way, they have decided already to vote PP as they don’t want to take part in having another term Zapatero in the Moncloa. Five out of my six life-time friends have decided to do the same. The other one is sympathetic with Catalan nationalism so I figure he is not voting for PP… As you see, my entourage is enchanted with Zapatero.
But more than this debate, I’m worried by the next one: according to political blog Escaño 351, there could be some news about ETA’s negotiation before it, to knock down PP’s position on the subject, six days before the elections:
Aníbal González writes for El Confidencial, that in the French Police -that works together with the Spanish Civil Guard- a new operation is rumoured against the chief of ETA commandos, Garikoitz Aspiazu Rubina, alias Txeroqui.
The capture of Txeroki will be the zenit of an operation of pursuit whose last step has been the detention of Mikel San Sebastián and Joseba Itrubide, ETA terrorists who, together with Igor Portu y Martin Sarasola, blow the T4 terminal of Madrid’s Barajas’ airport, which killed two Ecuatorians, who were working in Spain.
With this detention, Zapatero would achieve himself a magnificent goal in anti-terrorist policy, very critizised after the ETA-Government’s negotiations, and would end the critics of those who think he has not been tough enough in the fight against ETA.
Why do I say that I am worried? The detention of such a terrorist as Txeroki is, is so important that should be praised but the praise should not go at all to Zapatero, but to the Police Forces who are the ones who have been searching for him. But of course, everyone would shout “follow the leader, leader, leader, follow the leader” even if there is only a precipice ahead…
The text says:
February 21st: International Day for the Mother Tongue by UNESCO:
Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, General Director of UNESCO:
For several millions of Spanish-speaking people in Spain, this is an unhappy and hurtful day, it’s a day of mourning because of the exclusion and cultural cleansing the Spanish tongue is submitted to, because of the language and cultural imposition, named “language immersion”, that the policies of the Regional Nationalists are practising with the final goal of secession. [This happens ] in the regions of Catalonia, Basque Country, Galicia, Balearis Islands and Valencia, with the aggravating factor that in these last two regions they posses the “Valencian” and the “Balearic”, both old and idiosincratic languages in their territories and which are being “homogeneized” with the Catalan, which is a different language, with the goal of spreading the fictional “Catalan Countries. In these Spanish regions, the parents aren’t able to choose our mother tongue (and the one which is more spread in those areas) for the education of our children, being institutionally excluded and our Spanish culture gravely discriminated.
Is UNESCO an accomplice of the cultural-tongue cleansing that the parents are suffering for the nationalistic oppresion and discrimination??
If yesterday I wrote about the attack on María San Gil, today another PP candidate, Dolors Nadal, has been harrased (video inside) when she was going to give a conference at the Pompeu Fabra’s University. She has been unable to even begin with it. The independentists have shouted “No fascists in the university” and “Catalan Countries are not Spain“.
When Nadal was going to enter the room, some of those youths have tried to block it not to let her enter. There were several people pushed and slapped in that moment. Then when she was going to speak, some youths, who were out of the room, have begun to shout “fascist” to her, while the Mossos (Catalan Autonomous Police) were trying to save her from the pushes.
One of the men who was with Nadal has taken a fire extinctor, just in case the demonstrators were going to use it against the candidate. Then dozens of youths, inside the room, have insulted her.
In the end, the Mossos, considering the situation was out of control, have taken her out of the room and have driven her out of the compound in a secret police car.
No association has announced their responsibility for the boycott. But they were carrying propaganda from one of the associations of Catalan Independentist Youths. ERC (Catalan Republican Left) has stated they are not the responsible.
Oh and no condemnation from the PSOE’s representatives… 😦 Even if they should worry about the polls: PP is nearer PSOE each day (according to latest data: PP would have only 2 seats in Parliament less than PSOE). So El Pais is going to publish a special report on Zapatero, considering him as the best candidate: with satisfaction and tranquility, sure of himself, reasonably happy, with a smile, “Bishop-proofed“. 🙄 Yeah… so subtle and clever as ever… Today it has been published that Zapatero accepted a written proposition from ETA to begin the political negotiation.
And the ETA terrorists have said that Zapatero promised them Navarra:
ETA imprisoned terrorists have stated officially, in Gara, than during the negotiation of the Government with ETA “they were farther than in any other negotiation in the acknowledgement of out rights”, referring to the independence. According to the terrorists, “if a door was opened to achieve a solution to this conflict” was because Zapatero “agreed with that Autonomy Statute in which the four parts were involved”, that is, that Navarra, Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa y Álava were united.
Against the will of the people, without any kind of announcement. If this the Zapatero’s definition of democracy, I really do not like that democracy for sure…
A heated debate is taking place in Spain over the meaning of the family. In the wake of a massive pro-family march on December 30 in Madrid, the secretary of the Socialist Party (PSOE), Jose Blanco, has raised the debate’s temperature by asking Pope Benedict XVI to explain to him “just what exactly is the Christian family” and by recommending that “some members” of the Catholic Church “re-read the gospel.”
“As a Christian, I would like the Pope to explain to me just exactly what is the Christian family; maybe by traditional family he means that the woman just stays at home and does housework,” he told Antena 3 TV.
Blanco also called on “some members” of the Church hierarchy to “re-read the gospel,” since in his judgment one cannot “nourish inequality and injustice in the morning, and resolve them by the praying the rosary in the afternoon.”
Some Spanish bishops need to “evolve” in the same way that “Spanish and world society has evolved” in the recognition of rights for greater equality.
In fact he also added that “the majority of the measures Zapatero has taken could be found in the Gospel”. The debate now is what measures was referring himself to: gay marriage? adoption by homosexuals? Maybe the negotiation with the terrorists?
Popular Party leader, Mariano Rajoy, has announced he will create a Ministery of the Family and Social Well-being. I don’t want more bureaucracy, Mr. Rajoy: I like to hear concrete measures you are going to implement if you are elected.
**********
Thanks to some friends in Valencia we have known that the Majorship of the city, of (center-right) Popular Party has blockes the access to this blog from its internal net, which includes the popular libraries. When this site is visited, the user gets the following message: “ACCESS DENIED”.
This is not the first time a Popular Party’s major blocks a blog. My friend Aquiles, a right-wing gay blogger, was also blocked by Madrid’s Major, from Popular Party, too. In this case, it is much more idiot, as Aquiles has been (and still is) a supporter of Popular Party. The reasons? As ever: you are inciting hatred and racism.
Popular Party is failing to fight for freedoms, just the same way Socialists did. Specially, bloggers are not very well seen by the direction of the Popular Party as we are very critical with everything that we consider is not rightly done. Are we falling definitely to a dark age?
