Really important post. As a European, I fear this is the most important aspect it includes:
Erdoğan plays into the anti-military sentiment of many Europeans by depicting Turkey as engaged in a struggle between the military on one side, and Islamism as true democracy on the other. He counts on blanket support by European liberals and progressives, who remain silent if the scapegoat is right. Erdoğan uses bogeymen—generals, Alevis, or Jews depending on the audience—in order to consolidate power even further.

Bangladesh: Rape victim receives 101 lashes for becoming pregnant
The girls father was also fined and warned the family would be branded outcasts from their village if he did not pay.According to human rights activists, the girl, who was quickly married after the attack, was divorced weeks later after medical tests revealed she was pregnant.
…Her rape emerged after her pregnancy test and Muslim elders in the village issued a fatwa insisting that the girl be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment.
Her rapist was pardoned by the elders…

Indonesia: Christian churches torched by mob
A crowd of at least 1000 people burned down two Protestant churches last night in Sibuhuan (district of Padang Lawas, North Sumatra). The blaze was the culmination of tension between the faithful and the local Islamic community, tired of seeing ” too many faithful and too many prayers ” in a place not registered as a church.
The district chief of Padang Lawas, Basrah Lubis, said that “the attackers arrived in a flash. Their number was enormous, more or less a thousand. They were angry because the administration of the church had not responded to their demands: to change the use of buildings from ‘places of prayer’ to ‘neutral buildings‘. “

UK: Iraq hostage Peter Moore tells of mock executions
Former British hostage Peter Moore has told for the first time how he was regularly beaten and subjected to mock executions after being seized in Iraq.
The 36-year-old computer expert from Lincoln returned to the UK in January after a two-and-a-half year ordeal.
There were “many, many times” he thought he would be killed, he said.
He recalled how on one occasion, his guards blindfolded him, put a pistol to his head and pulled the trigger while another gun was fired behind his back.
“I just thought I was dead. And then I realised I could still hear laughing, I was still handcuffed and that wasn’t the case.”
