Terrorism funding: Hamas steals $400,000, frozen by Al-Fatah’s banking authority

Fatah emblemImage via Wikipedia

The Palestinian Authority, run by Al-Fatah*, is the only regulator for financial institutions and charitable institutions in the West Bank and Gaza. So in that context it declared Hamas-linked Islamic National Bank of Gaza illegal because it hadn’t applied for the necessary license to “engage in banking activities” in the area.

US Treasury Department also designated the Bank as being controlled by Hamas, preventing any US national or US companies to have any link with it.The explanation was given by US Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey:

“Consistent with our commitment to a well-regulated and transparent financial system in the Palestinian territories, Treasury will continue to exposeHamas’s efforts to create institutions with the trappings of legitimacy that are in fact controlled by and used to support a terrorist organization.”

The PMA continued with enforcing the regulation and froze the assets of another Hamas-linked organization, called “Friends of the Sick Association”, because the believed the charity was serving as a front for the terrorist organization.

Hamas’ response was to broke in the Gaza Strip branch of the Bank of Palestine and steal the frozen account’s money: $400,000.

Actually both Hamas and Al-Fatah are descendants of the same group (the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood), but despite that fact they continue waging war at one another. Make no mistake: Al-Fatah is no better than Hamas, but the latter is much more truthful, because they don’t hide their goals. Both of them want to destroy Israel as a state, so any agreement with them that saveguards Israel’s existence is not going to be very welcomed, whatever the rest of the terms.

On Fayyad’s plan to build a Palestinian state in two years

Op-Ed: De-facto deliberations | Op-Ed Contributors | Jerusalem Post

one of the most important and intriguing, though lesser known provisions of the Interim Agreement lies – probably deliberately – hidden deep in the seventh subparagraph of the Final Clauses (Article XXXI).

According to this provision, “Neither side shall initiate or take any step that will change the status of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip pending the outcome of the permanent-status negotiations.”

Clearly this vital provision places a reciprocal and parallel obligation on each of the parties – the PLO and Israel – not to unilaterally alter the status of the territories until such change is mutually agreed upon. The intention of the parties during the negotiations was clear – the Palestinian side will not declare a unilateral state, and the Israelis will not declare annexation.

IT WOULD be interesting to inquire whether the advisers of Prime Minister Fayad brought this very basic provision to his attention prior to the publication of his plan.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad had already rejected Fayyad’s plan to build a Palestinian state in two years.

In an effort to curtail unauthorized gun ownership, Fayad and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas have declared their intention to take legal action against armed gangs. “There is no doubt that we have the right to resist, but we must do this in an organized fashion and we must do away with the chaos,” Fayad explained.

However, Fayad aides said that the prime minister intends to deal with the issue of armed gangs through dialogue and not by engaging in a violent confrontation with them.

So, more or less, everything remains the same, doesn’t it?

Religious cleasing in Islamic countries

As ever no important MSM is reporting about them. This video refers to Christian persecution under Palestinian authority:

The Palestinian Constitution “guarantees freedom of religion”, while stating that Islam is the official religion and Shariah Law one of the sources of legislation”, “so any Muslim who converts to other faith must be killed”. “Western leaders say that Palestine is moving to a democratic state”.

Oh, yeah, don’t make me laugh!!! This is called religious cleansing in my language. If a democracy is based on the equality of all people under the law and the rule of law, the mere mention of Shariah Law as one the sources of legislation ends with that “democracy”. But of course, that’s what exists nowadays in Iraq and Afghanistan, so in the end, the conclusion must be that Western leaders are not supporting real democracy, but some sort of imitation.

Elecciones Generales 2008: Liveblogging

I begin here the live-blogging of the General Spanish Elections 2008. We will have to wait for around two hours to reach the final results.

The preliminary polls indicate that Socialists are very near an absolute majority so they could get to the Government with no need to pact with any other political force… But those haven’t any basis on real data so we must wait till the first results.

20:48: First results will be available around 22:30 (Spanish time).

21:11: With 9% of the vote examined: 164 Socialists, 136 Popular Party according to the Interior Ministry’s website.

21:27: 172 PSOE, 144 PP.

21:31: 170: PSOE, 150: PP (33% considered).

21:44: 171: PSOE, 150:PP (38,70% of the vote considered).

21:57: 171: PSOE; 150:PP (56,9% of the vote considered).

There is a tendency of PSOE lowering its percentage of vote (at first it was 48%, now it’s 44,83%). And PP going up: at first it was 35%, now it’s 39,26%. But we can say that the Socialists have AGAIN won the elections…

22:06: 169: PSOE; 152: PP. (64,58% of the vote considered).

22:08: 168 PSOE (44,55%); 154: PP (39,53%) (67,08% of the vote considered).

22:11: 169 PSOE (44,47%) PP: 153 (39,57%) (69% of the vote considered).

22:14: 168 PSOE (44,41%) PP: 154 (39,65%) (71,45% of the vote considered).

22:19: 168 PSOE (44,34%); PP: 154 (39,69%) (73,33% of the vote considered).

Basically, Socialists are concentrating the votes from both Nationalists and Communists which have nearly disappeared from Parliament. This can boost the extremism of the Government: Zapatero can even get harder in next term…

22:23: 168 PSOE (44,22%); 154 PP (39,82%) (76,66% of the vote considered).

22:25: 168 PSOE (44,17%); 154 (39,88%) (78,27% of the vote considered).

22:28: 167 PSOE (44,11%); 155 (39,93%) (79,73% of the vote considered).

22:36: 168 PSOE (44,05%); 154 (40,00%) (82,15% of the vote considered).

22:42: 167 PSOE (43,96%); 155 (40,15%) (84,30% of the vote considered).

Zapatero wants to speak but he cannot do it because there are a lot of supporters who are delighted with the results… He has begun, at last, remembering the victims murdered by ETA and by the terrorism.. He says “they live in our memory”. High participation, which is a motive of happiness… And thanks to the citizens who have contributed to a clear victory of teh Socialist party. “Four years ago you asked me not to fail you… so I have made all the efforts not to fail you.

I will lead this country for all but thinking before all in those people that haven’t all.

I will lead to make reality the Women’s aspirations, the Youth’s hopes.

I will lead to make sure that Spain is compromised with peace.

Llamazares is asking the supporters to consider if he can continue or not. But he is not going to opt for re-election in United Left (communists).

23:01: 167 PSOE (43,84%); 155 PP (40,15%) (89,69% of the vote considered).

23:17: 168 PSOE (43,79%); 154 PP (40,14%) (92,36% of the vote considered).

0:06: 169 PSOE (43,72%) 154 PP (40,13%) (96,34% of the vote considered).

Results in 2004: PSOE: 164; PP: 148.

The victims of the Merca Harav Yeshiva. Top row: Avraham David Moses (16), Ro’i Roth (18), Neria Cohen (15), Yonatan Yitzhak Eldar (16); Bottom row: Yochai Lifshitz (18), Segev Peniel Avihail (15), Yehonadav Haim Hirschfeld (19), Doron Meherete (26).

A senior commander interviewed by The Sunday Times said 300 of the group’s “best brains” had been secretly sent to Tehran.

Half are still being trained by Revolutionary Guards. They are learning how to make explosives from everyday items and produce deadlier rockets.

So far no Palestinian or Arab organization has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Palestinian sources have said that the attack had been planned by a Hamas network in the West Bank acting on orders from its leaders in Damascus. Hamas’ leadership in Gaza was not privy to the plan, which was drawn up in coordination with Hezbollah, the sources said.

NOTE: All the links are in English and some more English-speaking bloggers have written about this. So I am not going to copy the content of the links.

From Belmont Club,

Imad Muganiyeh, known to Americans as the man who killed Navy diver Robert Stethem; the man who tortured and killed CIA station chief William Francis Buckley, and possible mastermind of the 1983 Marine Barracks bombing in Beirut died in car bomb explosion in a posh suburb of Damascus.

Mughniyeh is also believed to have been behind the 1992 bombing of Israel’s embassy in Argentina in which 29 people were killed, and the blast at a Buenos Aires Jewish center two years later that killed 95.

Fausta’s blog

Counterterrorism Blog

The killing of Imad Mughniye in Damascus, what ever is the context and whom ever are the executors, is a benchmark in the war between the Iranian Terror networks and their enemies. Mughniye has led the Iranian and Hezbollah operations against US personnel since 1983 and was the top planner in the Hezbollah-Israel war. He was seen as the principal link between the Pasdaran (Iranian Revolutionary Guard) power and its supported organizations around the world including Hezbollah in Lebanon and overseas. But as important, was his role in coordinating the Iranian Terror activities with Syria’s intelligence services.

A representative of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas praised Hezbollah deputy commander Imad Mughniyah as a hero after the report today of the most-wanted terrorist leader’s death in a car bomb blast in Syria.

Abbas Zakki, the ambassador to Lebanon for the PA president’s Fatah organization, called Mughniyah a “hero and a loss for the Palestinian people and the Muslim nation.”

On August 31, the head of the PA’S procurement department, one Adel Awadallah (a.k.a. Adel al-Mughrabi), purchased a 4,000-ton freighter in Lebanon with $400,000 provided by a man named Fuad Shobaki. With the rank of brigadier general in the Palestinian military; Shobaki held the tide of director of the Military Financial Administration; in practice, he was widely considered to be Arafat’s closest financial advisor. The acquisition itself was supervised by two PA naval police officials, Fathi Razam and Omar Akawi. On September 12, the day after the World Trade Center/Pentagon terrorist attacks, the boat was registered with the Kingdom of Tonga and renamed the Karine-A. After steaming to Aden, Akawi took over as captain, with a crew of nine Egyptians and Jordanians–who evidently did not know about the arms smuggling plan–plus four armed and well-trained Palestinians. The ship proceeded to waters off the Iranian island of Kish. There, under the watchful eye of a chief aide to Imad Mughniyah–Hizballah’s operations commander and the man thought responsible for the bombings of the U.S. embassy and Marine barracks in Lebanon and the bombings of the Israeli embassy and Jewish community center in Argentina–the boat was loaded with eighty crates of weapons. Though the weapons were not an outright gift from the ayatollahs to Arafat, they were sold at steep discount–$30-50 million of goods for just $10 million.
