Syria: HRW criticizes Penal Code change on Honor Killings

Syria: No Exceptions for ‘Honor Killings’ | Human Rights Watch

The Syrian government should treat all murders alike and not make exceptions for so-called “honor killings,” Human Rights Watch said today. On July 1, 2009, President Bashar al-Assad abolished Article 548 of the Penal Code, which had waived punishment for a man found to have killed a female family member in a case “provoked” by “illegitimate sex acts,” as well as for a husband who killed his wife because of an extramarital affair. The article also lowered penalties if a killing was found to be based on a “suspicious state” concerning a female family member. The article that replaced it still allows for mitigated punishment for “honor killings,” but requires a sentence of at least two years.

“Two years is better than nothing, but it is hardly enough for murder,” said Nadya Khalife, Middle East and North Africa women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Syrian government should punish all murders alike – no exceptions.”

The new text of Article 548 reads: “He who catches his wife, sister, mother or daughter by surprise, engaging in an illegitimate sexual act and kills or injures them unintentionally (¿?) must serve a minimum of two years in prison.” In the previous text, the killer benefited from a complete “exemption of penalty“.

Meanwhile, dictator president al-Assad’s wife brags in facebook about her stylish fashion code. It’s good to have a tiny conscience.

Bangladesh: Islamic terrorism increasing in south

Islamic militancy in Bangladesh shows new signs of life |

“After a relatively long period of calm, Islamist militancy in Bangladesh is showing new signs of life, even in the face of continuous crackdowns on terrorist infrastructure and activity by counterterrorism forces in the country….

One estimate suggested there were about 12,000 cadres actively operating in the country, mostly madrassa (Islamic seminary) teachers, students and clerics of mosques…. In April of this year, Bangladesh intelligence agencies declared that the Islamist terrorist groups are reorganizing with the aim of making a deadly comeback.

Bangladesh’s teeming cities and rugged countryside have proven an unlikely safe haven for some of the jihadi world’s most hardened operatives. Recently, Bangladeshi police in Dhaka arrested an Afghan war veteran with ties to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the banned Pakistani terrorist organization held responsible for the Mumbai attacks last November, as The Daily Star, an English-language newspaper in Bangladesh, reports:

Indian national Mufti Obaidullah, who is one of the most wanted by the Indian law enforcement and intelligence agencies, has been placed on a seven-day remand for interrogation….

“He was arrested from the capital, and was taking preparations for a jihad by organising Bangladeshi mujahids with directives from Ameer Reza, a leader of Kashmir based Laskar-e-Taiyeba, who is an Indian national now staying in Pakistan,” the [Dhaka Metropolitan Police] commissioner said.

UK: Mecca’s Grand Mosque imam visiting Banbury to give a speech

‘Most famous’ imam visiting Banbury tonight – Banbury Today – Back to Home Page

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais is the imam of the Grand Mosque in the Islam holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia and leads more than two million followers in prayer during the annual pilgrimage there.

He will visit Banbury Town Hall this evening from 7pm to give a speech alongside Tony Baldry MP and other community figures, but he is not unfamiliar with controversy.

He has previously been called an antisemite for publicly praying to God to ‘terminate’ Jews and as a result has been barred from conferences in America and been refused entry to Canada.

The sheikh will speak in Arabic, with his speech being translated into English.

Town councillor Alyas Ahmed has helped arrange the visit and said: “It is for all the community, we want as many people as possible to attend, of all religions and beliefs.”

He really is a Judeophobe:

^ Shaykh Abdur Rahmaan As-Sudays“. April 19, 2002. Retrieved on 2007-03-19. “

Read the history to know that yesterday’s Jews are evil predecessors and today’s Jews are worse successors. They an ingrate people, they altered God’s words, worshipped calf, killed Messengers and denied their Messages. They are exiled people and the worst of mankind. Allaah cursed them and cast His wrath upon them. He turned some of them to monkeys and pigs and worshippers of creatures. They are worst in position and are astray from the right path.…

History of Jews is full of deception, trickery, rebellion, oppression, evil and corruption. They always seek to cause mischief on the earth and Allaah loves not the mischief-makers.

This guy has been awarded the Islamic Personality of the Year:

In 2005 Al-Sudais was named by the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) Organising Committee as its 9th annual “Islamic Personality Of the Year” in recognition for his devotion to the Quran and Islam.[1] When accepting his award in Dubai, he said: “The message of Islam and Muslims is modesty, fairness, security, stability, sympathy, harmony and kindness.”[5]

Thank God Allah… Islam’s message is one of kindness, because if not, what would this guy have said about evil Jooooozzzzzzz!

Anyway, the Islamic Thinkers Society (Wikipedia: they want the Global Caliphate and oppose US, Christianity and culture and specially homosexuality, which they see as “Western”… what thinkers) has not a very well opinion of this guy:

Abdurahman as Sudais is famously known for his recitation as the state-appointed preacher at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He is misusing the pulpit at Haram, as he slanders the Mujahideen As Qutaa at Turooq [ Highway Bandits], theives, Khawarij, etc. Like his colleagues, he has been calling for muwalaat to the Tawagheet in Arabia, & at one time so strongly that he referred as dying in a state of not giving baiyaah to them(the Saudi apostate rulers) as death in a state of Jahiliyyah. He further enraged the concious of the masses by using the pulpit in the Holy Haram to make Duaa for the good & well being of the Taghoot, and against the Mujahideen. Furthermore he has recently started to negate knowingly those aspects of the Deen that calls for casting fear in the enemies of Allah or showing bara’ to them. He laments about the deaths of “innocent” civilians but does not make a peep about the countless Muslims who have died as a result of aggression from the enemies of in our times (only Allah SWT knows the number). We have a message for him and people like him: Fear Allah, you recite the verses saying that every Muslim must protect his brothers and sisters yet you do not even denounce the massacres of the enemies of Islam with your tongue. Where were you when 1 million Iraqi babies died from radioactive fallout as a result of the Gulf War? He is a man who is blinded by his allegiance to the murtadeen of the Saudi government and sells out the Muslims for the sake of his government paycheck.

Oops… his invectives against the Jooozzzzzzz are not the only requirement to be considered by some Islamists as a pure Muslim. Lord, this world is difficult!

Central Asia: Hibz ut-Tahrir’s islamism is spreading

FEATURE-Tensions stir Islamist underground in Central Asia | Markets | Reuters

Sipping tea in a dim, smoke-filled teahouse in the Kyrgyz city of Osh, Rakhmatillo Ibragimov says the goal of his life is to restore Islamic rule in former Soviet Central Asia.

“They call us terrorists. That’s because they are afraid of us,” he says with a bashful smile that contrasts with the sharpness of his words. “The more they oppress us the stronger we become. We don’t want bloodshed. We want justice.”

A member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an outlawed Islamist group, he says ideas such as his are beginning to catch on in his native city of Osh in the Ferghana valley — a cauldron of ethnic and tribal tension in the heart of Central Asia.

Its dusty skyline pierced by the occasional minaret, Osh has long been synonymous with a post-Soviet rise of radical Islamism in a largely agrarian, cotton-growing region shared by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

But intense fighting in Afghanistan and rioting involving Muslim Uighurs in China to the east have put a new spin on old threats in an impoverished region lying at the centre of a geopolitical tug of war between Russia and the United States (link added by me).

Central Asia is really a puzzle, influenced by the delicate situation of both Afghanistan and Pakistan. But I don’t think that HuT can really solve anything there. In fact, it would complicate the situation further.

Wider policies of governments in Central Asia have probably contributed to the growth of Hizb ut-Tahrir, particularly in Uzbekistan. Repression by the Uzbek government has given it a certain mystique among some of the population, and the lack of alternative forms of political opposition or expression of discontent has ensured that it has attracted members from the mass of those opposed to the regime for political reasons. Poor economic policies have further undermined support for the government, and induced discontent among traders – a key Hizb ut-Tahrir constituency. Uzbekistan’s restrictive border regime has also increased support for a group that advocates a universal Muslim state (link also added by me), with no national distinctions.

For a small but significant group of predominantly young men, Hizb ut-Tahrir gives an easy explanation for their own failure to achieve change in their personal lives, in society or in the state system. It provides young men with some meaning and structured belief in an era of otherwise confusing and difficult social change. It also offers occasional material benefit and social support in states characterised by extreme poverty and social breakdown.

Drug trafficking in Central Asia is another complication of the present state of things in the region, together with corruption inherited from the USSR.

UK: the path from a difficult boy to a suicide bomber who committed suicide

Isa Ibrahim was a troublemaker at my school, but drugs and Islamism made him a terrorist – Telegraph Blogs

The blank stare was unrecognisable when Isa Ibrahim appeared on last night’s News at Ten. But it was definitely him – Andy, one of the most difficult boys I came across during my time in education. Now a young man, he had become “Isa”, sentenced to ten years in jail after police discovered his plans to suicide bomb a Bristol shopping centre.

When I knew Ibrahim – before his conversion to Islam and his change of name – he was a troublemaker, but certainly no terrorist. He was a couple of years below me at Downside, a Catholic school near Bath which was all boys until 2005. Even as public schools go, it was notably tough – many more of my schoolmates ended up in the Army than went to Oxbridge.

Ibrahim didn’t last long. Yesterday, the judge noted his “craving for attention”. It reminded me of one of my English classes. We were studying Heart of Darkness when loud shouting was heard from the next-door classroom. “Go to the detention room, you’re an absolute ass!”, a usually calm teacher bellowed. As my class looked up in surprise, Ibrahim loped past looking vaguely bored.

More likely, though, it was an addiction to drugs that made Ibrahim’s life disintegrate. He started on cannabis at a young age, and became lazy with school work. So he got in trouble with his teachers – and maybe his parents – which led to a resentment of figures of authority. The drug habits worsened, and he became addicted to heroin and cocaine.

Eventually, radical Islam offered Ibrahim a way out. It gave him a sense of identity. It granted him a feeling of imagined acceptance in a community of outcasts. It even helped him to overcome his drug addiction. How tragic and utterly terrifying, then, that it also inspired his lonely vision of suicide and mass murder.

I believe experts should look at these cases and really investigate what is happening to transform problematic guys into potential suicide bombers and how to stop that trend.

Turkey: alleged torturers and killers of three Christians don’t attend court hearing again

Missão Portas Abertas – Notícias – Turquia – Suspeitos de crime em Malatya não comparecem ao julgamento

Under the pretext of “recovering from a medical treatment” received at the beginning of this month, two of the main suspected killers of three Christians in Malatya haven’t attended the court for the second hearing, slowing again the procedure, according to the accusers.

The journalist Varol Bulent Aral, one of the suspected who incited five youths to brutally torture and kill Turkish Christians Necati Aydin and Ugur Yuksel and German Tilmann Geske at Zirve’s publishing company, two years ago, has again not attended the hearing, scheduled for July 17th.

The three Christians were tied and tortured before being murdered on April 18th, 2007, the Christian publishing company where they were working at the time. The alleged suspected Salih Guler, Cuma Ozdemir, Hamit Ceker, Abuzer Yildirim and gang-leader Emre Gunaydin were caught when they were fleeing the site of the crime.

Background: Bible publishing firm murders in Malatya, Turkey – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blog of the Persecuted Church has more on the trial. On 2008 it was reported that the impartiality of the judges was in doubt.

Compass Direct reports of the murder of another Christian in Istambul:

On a crowded street here last week a German businessman died after a Turk with a history of mental problems stabbed him for being a Christian.

Witnesses saw Ýbrahim Akyol, 26, stab Gregor Kerkeling in the chest on July 20 at 10:50 a.m. after following him out of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Istanbul’s central district of Beyoglu. Church security cameras captured the attack on Kerkeling, who regularly visited the church when he was in town for business.

Kerkeling, in his early forties, had just visited the church to pray that morning. Akyol, a Muslim who reportedly had been visiting area churches scouting around for a Christian victim, followed Kerkeling out of the church building and asked him for a Turkish lira. When Kerkeling refused and gestured him away, Akyol repeatedly stabbed him in the heart and chest area before passersby intervened. According to various news reports, an ambulance did not arrive in time to save Kerkeling’s life.

(…) In a statement to the prosecutor, Akyol reportedly confessed that he woke up that morning and decided he would kill a Christian. He took a kitchen knife with him and went to Istiklal Street, a long pedestrian and commercial road where some of the main traditional churches are located, looking for a victim.

I wanted to kill a Christian that day and was visiting churches for this reason,” he told prosecutors, according to the Hurriet Daily News. “I saw the person and killed him.”

Yet no outrage for the Muslim community as happened with the “Hijab Martyrcase. Another consequence of the creeping Islamization that affects Turkey.

Kenya: Expelled Dutchmen arrested on terror charges, now on Belgium

BBC NEWS | Africa | Expelled Dutchmen held in Belgium

Four Dutch nationals arrested and expelled by Kenya on suspicion of aiding insurgents in Somalia have been arrested in Belgium.

The 21-year-olds were arrested near the Somali border by Kenyan police who did not believe the four, of Moroccan and Somali origin, were tourists.

The Netherlands authorities have since opened a case against them and want the four men extradited from Belgium.

Hardline Islamists are battling Somalia’s UN-backed government.

There have been several recent reports of young men from the US, Europe and South Asia joining the insurgents in a “holy war”.

According to Malena Rembe of the Swedish Security Service, the Swedish-Somali man who died in Somalia had lived in Sweden since he was very young. This type of radicalization may pose a danger for Sweden, she says.
