Salim Mansur: “We have a deadly silence of the Muslim leadership”

On the massacre of Catholics in Baghdad (here, here, here and here), Muslim secular author Salim Mansur writes:

The non-Muslim world is increasingly not surprised and unmoved by the depravity of Muslim jihadis committing outrage, one after another without end in sight, and what can only be explained, unsatisfactorily, as a pathological wish to cause pain to the living by random acts of terrorist violence.

The murderous attack on the church in central Baghdad last Sunday by Muslim terrorists, if we go with the news reports, was merely another not unusual blood-soaked event in the daily cycle of news from Muslim countries.

But if such an atrocity was not just another criminal event in a “normal” day across the Arab-Muslim world, then we should have heard of a special meeting being called at the UN, or in one of the capitals of member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, to express outrage against those who killed innocent worshippers inside Our Lady of Deliverance Syriac Catholic Church in Baghdad.

We then should have heard of Muslim political and religious leaders expressing their grief over the dead and wounded — there were some 120 Iraqi Christians in attendance at the Sunday evening mass when Muslim terrorists attacked the church and left 58 dead with only a dozen escaping unhurt.

Instead, we have deathly silence of the Muslim leadership as non-Muslim minorities inside the Arab-Muslim world are routinely abused, their homes and places of worship under daily duress, and their hearts filled with fear of violent death in the hands of Muslim jihadis.

The silence signifies the abdication of any responsibility by governments of the Arab-Muslim world to protect non-Muslims in their countries, and severely punish those who target them.

Israel: Nazareth imam indicted for incitement to violence

An imam from a Nazareth mosque, Nazim Mahmoud Salim, was indicted on Sunday in Nazareth District Court for incitement to violence and supporting a terror organization. He was arrested nearly one month ago by the Shin Bet (Israeli Security Agency) and Israel Police.

Salim was originally arrested after one of the suspects in the November 2009 murder of taxi driver Yafim Weinstein told investigators that the imam’s sermons were what incited him to commit the murder.

The indictment stated that Salim gave sermons and circulated leaflets to the worshipers at his mosque that incited them to act against the state. He was accused of calling his worshipers to act violently on several occasions. Additionally, the indictment accused him of establishing a website, “Muslim 48,” to spread those opinions and others, including support for global jihad.

Aside from the Shihab a-Din Mosque in Nazareth, Salim also preached at various other mosques, including the al-Asqa Mosque in Jerusalem. Salim had previously called for jihad against Israeli soldiers, the pope, and all targets that cause harm to Islam. The imam was quoted as saying that “Jews are Satan,” and “Osama bin Laden is loved by God,” according to Army Radio.

Pakistan: Death toll in mosque suicide bombing over 70

Attacks continue against Ahmadiyya Muslims, this time in Pakistan:

The number of people killed in a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in north-west Pakistan has risen to 72, local officials say.

It happened during Friday prayers in the Darra Adam Khel area, near Pakistan’s tribal regions.

About 70 funerals were held early on Saturday, local official Yusuf Khan told the BBC Urdu service. Continue reading

“Islam not invasive”: “retreat centers” for Christian converts from Islam in Malaysia

It is much more correct to call them “education centers”. You know… you are not well, just get back to Islam:

A two-hour journey from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur revealed an isolated encampment where some Christian converts say they’ve been taken in order to be forced back to Islam.

The Malaysian government calls the facilities — retreat centers. Muslims willingly come there to strengthen their faith.

CBN News spoke to one Christian who wanted to remain anonymous, in fear he would be taken back to one of the “faith purification” facilities.

They were clearly angry and they wanted to kill me, but they did not harm me physically,” he recalled. “I know of many others. They force you to recite Islamic prayers and the Koran, to do all the things you’re suppose to do as a Muslim.”

They’re trying to force us to believe what we can’t believe,” the man continued. “These re-education centers come from the power of darkness.”

Nathan,” another former Muslim who’s identity is being protected, said he lost his property, job and family after officials learned he’d become a Christian. He’s hiding from the government so we’re also protecting his identity.

I’ve lost it all (but) does it matter? I mean, Jesus said in the Word what we should seek for is everlasting treasure,” Nathan explained. “I have counted my cost. I count my cost and I don’t mind paying for it… even if it means losing my life.”

Traditionally, Malays are Muslim. Five years ago, there were less than 200 Malay Christians in the country. Today, there are an estimated 1,000 or more.

Kosovo: Headscarf ban sparks debate over country’s identity

for the last few months, life for this 17-year-old has been anything but peaceful.

She was forced to leave school when she donned the hijab – or Islamic headscarf – in March, after the Kosovan government banned them in state schools.

The local authorities are deciding whether to allow her back when classes resume after the summer holiday.

I felt very sad and discriminated against because I want to have rights like others – I want to go to school,” Florinda tells me, as we sit on the terrace of her family house.

If they tell me to take it off, I won’t do that and I will leave the school because the hijab is more important to me than the school. It’s the most important thing in my life,” she adds. (Well, your choice… ).

The government decided to forbid the wearing of headscarves in public schools late last year, in accordance with the constitution that declares Kosovo – which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008 – a secular country.

Kosovo’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Vlora Citaku, says other reasons lie behind her government’s position.

The scarf in Kosovo is not an element of our identity. It’s a sign of submission of female to male, rather than a sign of choice“, she explains.

I don’t think a 16 or 17-year-old, let alone a five-year-old, can take the conscious decision to wear a scarf.”

I ask her what the difference is between a 17 and an 18-year-old, and why she would allow headscarves in university but ban them in public schools.

After 18 there is an overall perception that a person is capable of making their own decision, rather than having a decision imposed,” she says, contending that most people support the ban.

They add that there is a Catholic Cathedral which is being built in Pristina (Kosovo), while 90% of the people in the country are Muslims. And? What has to do building a church with wearing the hijab? Don’t Muslims build mosques also? And what has to do a building with women’s submission to men?

Germany: Terrorist suspect arrested in Saarland region

A terrorist suspect has been arrested in Germany’s Saarland region on Friday after posting three videos threatening to carry out terrorist attacks online.

The videos appeared on Youtube in mid-October, Saarland police said in a statement. The suspect had been under surveillance for several weeks, and was detained at his apartment on Friday morning.

The man demanded the release of an imprisoned member of the so-called Sauerland group which attempted to blow up US army bases in Germany in 2007.

Convict Daniel Schneider, who is serving his 12-year prison term in the Saarland region, was, like the arrested suspect, based in the town of Neunkirchen. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, has been observing activities in the Neunkirchen area for some time.

Schneider‘s lawyer said his client opposes the videos and the attempt to free him.

UK: Citizenship Restored to Cleric Wanted on Terrorism Charges in US

Abu Hamza

Abu Hamza

A British government ruling stripping the Egyptian-born Muslim cleric known as Abu Hamza al-Masri of his British citizenship was struck down Friday by a special immigration court. But government officials said the court’s action would not affect the government’s plan to extradite the cleric to the United States, where he is wanted on terrorism charges. Officials in the office of Home Secretary Theresa May said no decision had been made on whether to appeal the immigration court’s ruling to a higher British court.

The immigration panel upheld the claim by lawyers for Mr. Hamza, 53, whose real name is Mostafa Kamel Mostafa, that losing the British citizenship he gained through marriage in 1986 would leave him stateless, because Egypt’s government has revoked his Egyptian citizenship. He has carried his fight to avoid extradition to the European Court of Human Rights.

He is wanted in the United States, where he is accused in connection with a plot to establish a terrorism training camp in Oregon, and is alleged to have had a role in planning a terrorist ambush in Yemen in 1998 in which 16 foreign tourists, some of them Americans, were taken hostage. Four hostages were subsequently killed.
