US: Obama adviser decries anti-Islam sentiments

Speaking to about 400 people in Livonia, President Barack Obama’s envoy to the Muslim world said there is a “disturbing rise in anti-Islamic sentiment” that may be caused in part by the poor economy.

The things you can say about Islam you can’t say about any other faith,” Rashad Hussain, Special Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, said Saturday night at the annual fund-raising dinner of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, a Muslim-founded think tank based in Clinton Township. “During tough economic times, groups that are seen to be the other … the scapegoating can increase.”

Hussain travels the world on behalf of the U.S. government to improve outreach to the Muslim world. Metro Detroit has a sizeable Muslim population.

Hussain said he’s concerned about the increasing vitriol directed at Muslims, which he said may be due to their increasing visibility in the U.S.
It’s a “reaction to a lot of progress made by Muslim communities,” he said.

No, it’s not because “Muslims are more visible“. It’s just the only religion that nowadays is used to kill, in order to impose politically its own system. Instead of blaming the rest for criticism they made, it’s better you see what they are doing.

It’s absolutely disgusting that someone can say something like this, specially if he is a speaker of US Govt.

Afghanistan: Negotiating with Taliban will crush women

Reading his Oct. 23 New York Times column from Kabul, I was appalled at journalist Nicholas Kristof‘s naivete when it comes to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Kristof, author of Half the Sky and often identified as a proponent for women’s empowerment, argues for a reduction of American troops in Afghanistan and for a peace deal with the Taliban.

In seeking to convince himself that this turn of events will not be harmful to Afghan women, he optimistically provides some astoundingly slim anecdotal evidence to convince us that the Taliban are really not so bad.

Kristof feels uncomfortable with what he terms the U.S. “occupation“– though I know few Afghans who refer to the U.S. or international presence here that way — and so waves away his own discomfort over the spectre of a new Taliban government in Afghanistan by essentially saying, don’t worry, the Taliban might let girls have some schools, in some mosques, in some cases. This is hardly a reassuring argument to girls and women — who have gained the most since the fall of the Taliban — and conversely, have the most to lose from a Taliban return.

The evidence that girls will be able to go to school under the Taliban is slim. While girls might go to schools in some areas, in my experience, this is highly exceptional and by no means a uniform practice. The Taliban have been quite consistent in their beliefs that girls should not be educated and women who work outside the home deserve to die, a belief enacted in the Taliban’s murder of numerous female politicians, elections workers, policewomen and other prominent professional women. They are hardly interested in the protection or welfare of children given they regularly use children as suicide bombers and spotters and have hung boys they accuse of “spying for the Americans“.

Well, I am a really Angry Catholic Infidel after reading what you’re about to read and it’s probable than you finish the post, you are angry too. The post is a bit long, so I apologize in advance.

Iraqi hostage of Catholic Church "Lady of the Salvation" after being released

Deeply moved by the violent deaths of so many faithful and of the reverend priests Tha’ir Saad and Boutros Wasim, I wish, on the occasion of the Sacred Rite of funerals, to participate spiritually, while praying that these brothers and sisters be accepted into the mercy of Christ in the House of the Father.

For years this beloved country has suffered untold hardships and even Christians have become the subject of brutal attacks that, in total disregard of life, an inviolable gift from God, want to undermine trust and peaceful coexistence. Continue reading

Malaysia: exiled blogger is free to return; he says he won’t

Raja Petra KamaruddinHe allegedly insulted Islam:

Malaysia’s top blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who fled the country after being held under security laws in 2008, is free to return after a detention order lapsed, his lawyer said Monday.

However the founder of the popular Malaysia Today website, which has outraged top leaders with its stream of critical stories, is unlikely to leave his self-imposed exile in Britain for fear of fresh charges, he said.

This order has lapsed but it does not stop the authorities from seeking my client’s detention on other grounds should he return,” said lawyer Jadadish Chandra.

“Raja Petra is in the UK at the moment and he is unlikely to return to Malaysia anytime soon,” he told AFP.

Raja Petra was detained in September 2008 and held for 56 days under the Internal Security Act, which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

He was accused of writing articles that allegedly insulted Islam. But the blogger, himself a member of Malaysia’s majority Muslim community, is best known for his political articles.

via France24 – Malaysian blogger free but likely to remain in exile.

He is not an “Islamophobe“, he is a Muslim. And yet had to exile himself to UK if he wanted to remain free after being charged with “insulting Islam” and arrested.

In what country people are given more freedom? Yep, not in the “Muslim-majority” one… :(

Investigation: Why did Iran register ships in the Isle of Man?

A BBC investigation has uncovered questions over whether Iranian ships have been registered in the Isle of Man to evade international sanctions.

Later this month Foreign Secretary William Hague and his EU counterparts are expected to release more details about the latest round of European sanctions aimed at halting Iran’s military machine and possible development of weapons of mass destruction.

But a File on 4 investigation has discovered questions over whether the Iranians have already sidestepped the international arms embargo, on the UK’s own doorstep by setting up companies in the Isle of Man to register ships for its fleet.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (IRISL) has been under increasing levels of international sanctions during the past two years for its part in smuggling nuclear technologies and ballistic missile parts as well as for running weapons to other groups allied to the regime in Tehran.

Thousands of miles away from the Gulf, on the Isle of Man, a tiny UK Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea which has its own laws and an ancient parliament, a local businessman has been involved in transferring the ownership of IRISL vessels into six companies he has helped to form.
