France: “Allah’s revenge” on Sarkozy for proposing “burqa ban”?

Islam/ Musulmani su malore Sarkozy: “vendetta di Allah” – Esteri – Virgilio Notizie

What has happened to Nicolas Sarkozy, is just an advise from the Islamic God: Allah would have taken vengeance on Sarkozy for his recent words on the full Islamic veil which only women’s eyes . The daily newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi reports that the majority of Saudi population “is convinced” about that. “To strike Sarkozy with health problem is Allah’s vengence for disturbing the poor Muslim women in his country”. This is a “divine” message to a “bad man”, according to fundamentalist Islam. They are referring to the recent accident Sarkozy suffered in the Versailles park, on July 22nd, just in front of the Assembly where he has pronounced his “blasphemy speech”

Even if this happens to be really logical considering their beliefs, I haven’t found any other link that refers to this or confirming it. If anyone has any knowledge of this, he/she can leave a comment on the comments section. Thanks.

Global Voices Online » Hijablogging: On Burqas and Bans includes several reactions on the blogosphere (mostly against the burqa ban, based on “the women’s freedom to wear it”). Even if I don’t really believe this is a question of “freedom” but of “really accepting the values and social norms of the place where you live”, it’s interesting to read about the other side’s views too.

Most recently, French President Nicholas Sarkozy proposed a ban on the burqa.

French lawmaker suggests gradual ban on burqas

The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, put together a committee of 32 legislators from all four major political parties to study the wearing of burqas and niqabs, face-covering veils worn primarily by women in Saudi Arabia and by some other Muslim women.

I particularly think that Sarkozy fainted after his son told him he is going to be grandfather by the end of the year

Egypt: abductions of young Coptic girls continue

Muslims Abduct Two Christian Coptic Girls in Egypt

Mrs. Samira Markos, who lives in Alexandria, sent an appeal to Egypt4Christ advocacy, pleading with them to rescue her daughter from forced Islamization. The mother said that her daughter Amira Morgan (born 9/9/1992) was abducted on 7-18-2009 on her way to work in the plastics factory near their home.

Egypt4Christ sent one of its members in Alexandria to verify the mother’s plea and met with one of the family relatives who corroborated the story.

“At 10 o’clock of the same morning someone called me and asked if I was Amira’s mother. He introduced himself as Sheikh Mohammed, and said that my daughter is fine and will convert to Islam,” the mother said. “When I cried and begged him to let me have my daughter back, he said he would let me see her again after her conversion to Islam, and ended the call. I tried calling that cell phone back several time, but there never was a reply.”

The mother went to El-Sennin Mosque in her neighbourhood at 1.30 PM, after the Muslim noon prayers, and asked a bearded man emerging from the Mosque regarding Sheikh Mohammed, he laughed and said they have more than fifty Sheikh Mohammeds.

When I started to cry at the Mosque entrance, one of them came to me and said ‘Listen, mother of Amira, I am warning you not to report the abduction to the police or do anything, the price will be your son Meena (9 years old) being slaughtered in front of your own eyes. I am not threatening, I’m talking seriously.’” He further said “Listen, your daughter Amira will convert to Islam next Friday, and we are now preparing her for that. Now go home and stay indoors until everything is quietly over.”

(…) Another episode of Coptic female abduction took place on 7-22-2009, also in Alexandria, when 18-year old Ingy Basta went to repair her cell phone in the Nozha Airport area, and was never seen again. Her father reported the case to the police on 23/7/2009 but she has not been found yet. Ingy was be engaged on Sunday 7/26/2009 to a Coptic man.

Egypt4Christ believes that Ingy was abducted by the same Muslim group which operates in the Nozha Airport area of Alexandria. On 28/5/2009 their Imam falsely accused a Coptic young man of stealing the donations box from the Zawiya corner (prayer room) of El-Nour Mosque, after he refused to convert to Islam. Maged Saad was found innocent of this theft by the court.

Ms Rasha Nour, Head of Egypt4Christ warns that the Alexandria Governorate has become full of intolerance towards Christians, which could lead to a sectarian strife at any time because of the “gangs of Islamization,” who fill all the neighborhoods in Alexandria. “Those gangs are headed by a group of Sheikhs who are backed by the police authorities, but mainly the State Security in El-Faraana, downtown Alexandria,” says Rasha. “One of these is Sheikh Hassan Saber Khalil who is well known to all the police officers. There are other Sheikhs whose names we reserve and will expose if needed.”

Nigeria: HRW asks for an investigation into death of Boko Haram’s leader

This is an update on this story: Nigerian police kill Islamist leader, face criticism

Nigerian police Friday hailed the killing of the leader of an Islamist sect as a victory over extremism, but human rights workers called for an investigation into his death.

Mohammed Yusuf, 39, whose Boko Haram sect caused mayhem and hundreds of deaths across northern Nigeria this week, was shot Thursday night as security forces cracked down on his followers.

‘Mohammed Yusuf was killed by security forces in a shootout while trying to escape,’ a police spokesman told Nigerian television.

(…) Yusuf was paraded before local journalists after his capture. Several hours later, he was dead, supposedly shot while escaping.

New York-based Human Rights Watch called for an investigation into Yusuf’s death, saying it believed it to be unlawful.

Extrajudicial killings are common in Nigeria. Police have on many occasions been accused of murder in the restive Niger Delta, where militants have been conducting a campaign of sabotage against oil facilities.

(…) President Umaru Yar’Adua, who is himself a Muslim from the north, authorised the army to take whatever action was necessary to restore
order.

The police and army quickly struck back with brutal force. At least 300 people are believed to have died, the majority of them militants, although civilians are also among the dead.

Earlier, a Prensa Latina report said that 600 people were killed in the violence.

I feel HRW would have to worry more about other people’s deaths…

Belgium: Turkish imam invited to preach at a Catholic church, denounces the “infidels”*

Belgique : Invité à prendre la parole à l’église à l’occasion de la Fête nationale, un imam turc lit en arabe des sourates qui dénoncent les infidèles – Poste de veille

Catholic priests are not probably authorised to give sermons at mosques. If that was the case and they insulted the Muslims, they would end their days under police protection. The Flemish councillor Béatrice Meuelmans considers that the angry reaction of the people attending the Mass, was caused by their opposition to Turk regime, being for the most part Subsaharans and oriental Christians. She adds that probably the outrage wouldn’t have been so strong if the supremacist imam would have been Moroccan!

After carrying an investigation, it looks like that precisely was the excerpt from Al-qawm al-kâfirîn (The infidel people) pronounced by the imam, the one that outraged the people attending the Mass. “It’s shocking because he pronounced precisely an excerpt of the Quran that precisely is about infidels“, said Ibrahim Erkan, local councillor (CDH, center party) of Aramaic origin and who speaks several languages, among others Arab and Turkish . [Note, it was precisely this man the one who protested the first, as he knew what the imam has said] (…)

Some participants think the imam has pronounced an excerpt of the Sura Al-Baqara (the cow) where we can find this passage: “It’s true: the unbelievers don’t believe now, they don’t care, even if you tell them: they will never believe. God has shut their hearts and ears; and a veil is covering their eyes; and for them a great punishment is awaiting.“ (…)

“There has been no improvisation, we have been discussing this for three months, to know what imam to choose“, says Béatrice Meulemans (SP.A). (…) I understand that it’s more difficult for Oriental Christians to listen to islam in a Church because they come from countries where there are conflcits between Islam and Christian minorities(…)”, she added.

For anyone interested: the complete sura can be found here: Arabic Quran Al Baqarah Surah 2. The Cow

But why is an imam invited to preach at a Catholic church in the National Day?

Afghanistan: Govt strikes a deal with Talibans on Badghdis region

Tregua con los talibanes en la zona española

Afghan Government reached a deal with the Taliban in the Badghis region (on the country’s northeast), where the Spanish troops are working. This is the first gesture in the middle of the vaiolence’s escalation that the country s suffering before the next presidential election on August 20th. The agreement was reached on last Saturday in this province in the frontier with Turkmenistan, but Govt’s speaker Seyamak Herawi made it public on Thursday. According to the agreement, the Afghan Govt won’t attack the Talibans in this region and in return, they will leave three zones in the district of Bala Murghab and leave the Commission in peace to begin its activity. Authorities remarked that they want to strike other similar deals in other regions to improve security ahead of the elections. The news were reported afther the candidate to the Afghan Vicepresidency, Mohammed Qasim Fahim, of Karzai’s party, was not hurt by a terrorist insurgent attack in the north of the country.

I wonder what role Spain has played here, as the deal has been reached in a region under Spanish troops’ control.

Iran: confirmed arrest of 3 American tourists

Kurd officials: Iran confirms it has 3 Americans – Yahoo! News

Iran has confirmed it detained three Americans who were in the area of the Iranian border while on a hiking trip, Kurdish officials said Saturday. The U.S. State Department has said it was looking into the situation.

The Kurdish regional government’s envoy to Washington, Qubad Talabani, told The Associated Press the three were tourists and are in Iranian custody. He said the Americans mistakenly crossed into Iranian territory Friday at the border town of Ahmed Awaa.

“The Iranians said they have arrested them because they entered their land without legal permission,” he said.

Kurd Officials: Iran Confirms It Has 3 Americans – ABC News

A senior security official in Sulaimaniyah, near the Iranian border in northern Iraq’s oil-rich Kurd region, said Saturday the three were last heard from after they contacted a friend saying they entered Iran by mistake and troops surrounded them. There has been no contact with them since, he said.

Another hostage crisis? Apparently they were warned by the police not to hike in that mountainous terrain:

Ahmed named the three as Shane Bower, Sara Short and Joshua Steel, while Shaun Gabriel Maxwell stayed behind in their hotel in the autonomous Kurdish region’s second largest city of Sulaimaniyah.

More here:

An official in the region told the BBC that the Iraqi border guards saw three Americans with big backpacks crossing the border, but they did not stop them because they thought Americans were allowed to go anywhere.

The mountainous border region is popular for hiking, and the American walkers had no interpreter or bodyguards.

Venezuela: Attorney General proposes law to regulate freedom of expression*

Venezuelas freedom of expression: worsening each day

Venezuela's freedom of expression: worsening each day

BBC NEWS | Americas | Venezuela mulls tough media law

A tough new media law, under which journalists could be imprisoned for publishing “harmful” material, has been proposed in Venezuela.

Journalists could face up to four years in prison for publishing material deemed to harm state stability.

Public prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz, who proposed the changes, said it was necessary to “regulate the freedom of expression” without “harming it”.

The move comes at a time of rising tension over private media regulation.

Under the draft law on media offences, information deemed to be “false” and aimed at “creating a public panic” will also be punishable by prison sentences.

The law will be highly controversial if passed in its current form.

It states that anyone – newspaper editor, reporter or artist – could be sentenced to between six months and four years in prison for information which attacks “the peace, security and independence of the nation and the institutions of the state”.

Chavez denies that he intends to silence critics, saying his government fully respects freedom of expression.

Wow, the irony… Three evils again

» “Ver televisión es vivir en angustia y en zozobra” en Noticias24.com

The General Prosecutor of the Bolivarian Republic, Luisa Ortega Díaz, denied that she is proposing a “new Law of Political Crimes”, but on the contrary: she is making a proposal to contribute to the present discussion on the National Assembly. She also added that the “abuses of freedom of expression should also be controlled”.

Ortega also commented that “every right should have a limit” and that “rights are not absolute”. She continued saying that, when in the exercise of freedom of expression someone attacks the rights of a group “there should a provision to grant that group the limits to that right”.

(…)

“These are just proposals I made, but they are not absolutes, I even included the right of the own workers of the MSM. We should also add the protection of the MSM to report informations“, she added.

“Watching television nowadays is living in anguish. I believe that, as General Prosecutor, we have to regulate this. I believe that freedom of expression mush be in its highest but must be a good freedom”, Ortega maintained.

Related to the Nation’s security and independence, she remarked that the “nation’s security should be above freedom of expression“.

We must preserve the State, because the State goes beyond all of us and, if for that, we must make laws that regulate the abusive use of freedom of expression, we must do it”, she added. (speaking about fascism…wasn’t this “the socialism of the XXIst century”? Looks much older, doesn’t it?)

Breibart has repoted Ortega’s words too (via Fausta).

PoliGazette comments on this:

those “progressives” who added Chavez to their Castro/Che pantheon of socialist heroes find these reports inconvenient and thus ignore them. But these blatant exposures of the repressive nature of Chavez’ politics is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid.

Absolutely true…

Yesterday a new electoral law was also passed.

It allows the National Election Council to redraw voting district boundaries.

(…) The president’s opponents say the law is an effort to prevent them from getting a foothold in the National Assembly, and that it would help Mr Chavez’s United Socialist Party (PSUV) in congressional elections due next year.

Tomas Sanchez, one of a dozen deputies to vote against the bill, said he expected it to “change the district lines, mixing up places where the opposition is stronger with places where the PSUV usually wins, and thereby weaken the opposition”.

Pakistan: Christian flee after Muslims destroy village*

Union of Catholic Asian News » News Archive » Christians flee after Muslims destroy village

Smoke was still rising from the Christian village of Korian in Punjab province on July 31 after it was completely destroyed in a violent raid the previous night by thousands of Muslims.

Korian was home to about 100 Christian families, most of them laborers, who all fled the area in the wake of the attack. No one died in the incident.

The village in Faisalabad diocese was attacked after Muslims accused a family there of blasphemy. In all, 60 houses and two churches belonging to the Church of Pakistan and the New Apostolic Church were destroyed and livestock stolen.

“They have left nothing. My horse, my only source of income, has also been taken,” said Shubaan Masih, a local Christian.

The mob also blockaded the road leading to the village for several hours refusing entry to police or firefighters.

Masih said the mob was armed with firearms and explosives. “They used trucks to break the walls and petrol to start the fires,” he said. “We saved our lives only by hiding in the fields until three in the morning, when relatives arrived with vehicles to collect us. The children cried all night,” Masih said.

Tension between the Christian and Muslim communities in the area arose after pages containing Islamic inscriptions were found in front of a Christian home on July 26 following a wedding.

A group of Muslims then interrogated those who attended the wedding party, and accused the family of desecrating the Qur’an. The family says it has no knowledge of the offence but nevertheless apologized on July 30, saying that children who did not know what they were doing could have been responsible.

Muslims from surrounding villages gathered that evening at the local mosques before the mood turned ugly, Atif Jamil Pagaan, spokesperson of a Christian NGO told UCA News.

Local Muslims have filed charges against the family according to the country’s blasphemy laws.

But I’m sure CNN, BBC or NYT won’t report about this. What would have happened if some Jooooooozz or some Fascist Christians would have done this same thing?

*Spero Forum has a little more on this:

the local police have charged three Christians, Mukhtar Masih, Talib Masih and Imran Masih, with blasphemy. However, they were not arrested until the actual filing of the report. Another Christian, Mehnga Masih, submitted an application against 22 people for attacking Christian houses. No action has yet been taken by the police on his compliant.

China: Discrepancy in numbers about the Xinjiang riots

An update on this story: VOA News – China Releases Names of Suspects in Xinjiang Riots

Human Rights Watch Asia researcher Phelim Kine says the discrepancy in numbers is why his group is calling for the Chinese government to allow an independent U.N. investigation into the incident.

“Both sides, the Chinese narrative and the narrative of the overseas Uighur groups, they lack independent verifiable documentation, so we really do not know, there is key data and key information about what really happened on July 5,” said Kine.

Chinese authorities say in addition to those killed, more than 1,600 were injured in the unrest. Late Wednesday, authorities in Xinjiang said that 235 more suspects have been arrested, raising the official number of those in custody following the riots to more than 1,400.

FP Passport has a really interesting post about the accusations Kadeer has made against China:

While China’s attempts to pressure other countries (and a movie festival in Australia) over the Uighurs have been pathetic, one point should be made in its favor: the Western media response has been rather curious – numerous publications are carrying the quotes, but none that I’ve seen mention any further proof, even from Kadeer herself, whereas the AP account before her visit to Japan noted that “China has not provided evidence” of Kadeer’s alleged role in the riots. This is not to question Kadeer’s account (China’s reputation for forging the facts when advantageous is well-established), but to ask: why merely repeat her words? 10,000 people in one night is a serious accusation by any country’s standards, and similar claims about other countries would not (and do not) get the same benefit of the doubt.

I agree: I believe this woman is exaggerating (as China is lowering the numbers). BUT I have to add that I don’t have any faith in UN doing anything “independent“, specially when there are Muslims. Although I believe that the practically lack of protests we saw when the Uighurs were repressed, show the Muslim world doesn’t have a lot of interest in their situation.

UK: AlQaeda supporters joined MI5?

BBC NEWS | UK | Al-Qaeda supporters ‘joined MI5′

A senior Tory MP has asked the home secretary whether al-Qaeda sympathisers were mistakenly recruited by MI5.

Patrick Mercer, chairman of the Home Affairs counter-terror sub-committee, said he was told six recruits were ejected after worries about their past.

Two allegedly attended al-Qaeda training camps while the others had unexplained gaps in their CVs
, Mr Mercer told the Daily Telegraph.

A Home Office spokeswoman declined to comment on the claims.

Daily Telegraph:

The potential breach occurred as the security services battled to fill an intelligence gap in the wake of the July 7 2005 bombings on London’s transport network which resulted in the deaths of 52 people.
(…) Emote - :OMG:The Daily Telegraph has learned that six new Muslim recruits (notice that the Beeb doesn’t mention the recruits were in fact Muslims) were thrown out of the service because of serious concerns about their pasts.
Two of the six were said to have attended training camps in Pakistan where they could have come into contact with al-Qaeda recruiters. The remainder had unexplained gaps of up to three months in their curricula vitae.
Mr Mercer told The Daily Telegraph: “The attacks of September 2001 should have prompted the Government to seek ways to seek drastic measures for the expansion of our security services.
“In fact it took an attack on this country for such measures to be started
. But at this point it was an unseemly rush at which our enemies, not unsurprisingly, took advantage.”
Mr Mercer said he was worried that the Security Services might not have rooted out all al-Qaeda sympathisers because of the urgency to build up knowledge about the Muslim community.

:shockedCan’t understand this really. And then you go to MI5 page and they say:

We welcome all applications, but would be particularly interested to hear from women, individuals from ethnic minority groups and disabled people.:wtf: revamp

They don’t add: we don’t welcome Al-Qaeda linked applicants…

Israel: Lieberman accuses Chávez of Judeophobia and ties with Islamists

Mideast: Lieberman accuses Venezuelan president of ties to Islamists – Adnkronos Politics via Diplodemocracia:

Israel’s hard-line foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman has accused Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez of cooperating with Islamic extremists and anti-Semites. He made the remarks as he concluded a 10-day South American visit which included stops in Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Colombia.

“I will not speak about intelligence specifics, but we have enough to be concerned about the collaboration between radical branches of Islam and Hugo Chavez,” said Lieberman in an interview with Bogota-based newspaper El Tiempo published on Friday.

“Israel had a bad experience when attacks occurred in Buenos Aires. Today we see the closeness between Chavez and the Iranians, and of course we want to prevent further attacks against Israelis,” Lieberman said when answering questions seeking evidence to support Israel’s claim that the Iran-backed Lebanese Shia militant movement Hezbollah has cells in Venezuela.

Israel’s claims of Venezuela’s links to Hezbollah – made to a Jewish News Agency of Argentina by an Israeli diplomat accompanying Lieberman – were vehemently denied by Venezuela’s foreign ministry.

Lieberman also accused Chavez of anti-Semitism after the Venezuelan president said the United States has turned neighbouring Colombia into a Latin American version of Israel by setting up a military platform there.

The allegations by Chavez show “xenophobia, anti-Semitism, anti-Israelism”.

I’ve been ambushed! Seven things I love

Yes, I’ve been ambushed by Maggie, who explains what I should do after the (oooohhhhhhhhhh Emeete Ambush) ambush!:

Now I have to tell you about 7 things that I love and then tag 7 of my friends to do the same. I’m going to play this a bit differently because all of us will probably say we love our God, we love our family, we love our country, we love our friends, or some variation of this, and we all love to blog, so I’ll say those are my first loves, and here are the next 7.

Great idea. So these are my 7 loves:

  1. Reading. Specially crime novels and Jane Austen’s.
  2. Rational people. People who want to find solutions to problems, who think with their minds LOOK AT MEH THINK (God has given the intellect for something…) and not with their toes.
  3. The beach. Don’t like getting suntanned, but really love the beach.
  4. Blogging. Heh. If not, I would not being doing this. You always meet some asshole in the way, but most people are decent and rational. Just because of them, it merits the fight.
  5. Listening to music. Very irregular about taste: don’t like a group or a singer, but rather some special songs. A recommendation: Tina Turner, we don’t need another hero and what’s love gots to do with it (no, I don’t like her hairstyle in both songs…). Beethoven. Aranjuez’s Concert And Albinoni’s Adagio.
  6. Very Irresistible de Givenchy.
  7. :paint:Any painting by Murillo and Greco and The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon by Burne-Jones.

Albinoni’s Adagio: really melancholic and sad piece but a masterpiece Notemoticons 2:

Aranjuez’s Concert, the epitome of Spanish classical guitar :Guitar::

So now, I have to ambush some fellow bloggers, that either I have known for some time or had commented here and that I don’t know they have anything against doing memes. So there you go:

  1. Velvet Hammer.
  2. AOW.
  3. Angel.
  4. Tabatha.
  5. Solstice Witch.
  6. Xanthippa.
  7. Vicki.
