Syria: HRW criticizes Penal Code change on Honor Killings

Syria: No Exceptions for ‘Honor Killings’ | Human Rights Watch

The Syrian government should treat all murders alike and not make exceptions for so-called “honor killings,” Human Rights Watch said today. On July 1, 2009, President Bashar al-Assad abolished Article 548 of the Penal Code, which had waived punishment for a man found to have killed a female family member in a case “provoked” by “illegitimate sex acts,” as well as for a husband who killed his wife because of an extramarital affair. The article also lowered penalties if a killing was found to be based on a “suspicious state” concerning a female family member. The article that replaced it still allows for mitigated punishment for “honor killings,” but requires a sentence of at least two years.

“Two years is better than nothing, but it is hardly enough for murder,” said Nadya Khalife, Middle East and North Africa women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “The Syrian government should punish all murders alike – no exceptions.”

The new text of Article 548 reads: “He who catches his wife, sister, mother or daughter by surprise, engaging in an illegitimate sexual act and kills or injures them unintentionally (¿?) must serve a minimum of two years in prison.” In the previous text, the killer benefited from a complete “exemption of penalty“.

Meanwhile, dictator president al-Assad’s wife brags in facebook about her stylish fashion code. It’s good to have a tiny conscience.

Bangladesh: Islamic terrorism increasing in south

Islamic militancy in Bangladesh shows new signs of life |

“After a relatively long period of calm, Islamist militancy in Bangladesh is showing new signs of life, even in the face of continuous crackdowns on terrorist infrastructure and activity by counterterrorism forces in the country….

One estimate suggested there were about 12,000 cadres actively operating in the country, mostly madrassa (Islamic seminary) teachers, students and clerics of mosques…. In April of this year, Bangladesh intelligence agencies declared that the Islamist terrorist groups are reorganizing with the aim of making a deadly comeback.

Bangladesh’s teeming cities and rugged countryside have proven an unlikely safe haven for some of the jihadi world’s most hardened operatives. Recently, Bangladeshi police in Dhaka arrested an Afghan war veteran with ties to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the banned Pakistani terrorist organization held responsible for the Mumbai attacks last November, as The Daily Star, an English-language newspaper in Bangladesh, reports:

Indian national Mufti Obaidullah, who is one of the most wanted by the Indian law enforcement and intelligence agencies, has been placed on a seven-day remand for interrogation….

“He was arrested from the capital, and was taking preparations for a jihad by organising Bangladeshi mujahids with directives from Ameer Reza, a leader of Kashmir based Laskar-e-Taiyeba, who is an Indian national now staying in Pakistan,” the [Dhaka Metropolitan Police] commissioner said.

UK: Mecca’s Grand Mosque imam visiting Banbury to give a speech

‘Most famous’ imam visiting Banbury tonight – Banbury Today – Back to Home Page

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais is the imam of the Grand Mosque in the Islam holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia and leads more than two million followers in prayer during the annual pilgrimage there.

He will visit Banbury Town Hall this evening from 7pm to give a speech alongside Tony Baldry MP and other community figures, but he is not unfamiliar with controversy.

He has previously been called an antisemite for publicly praying to God to ‘terminate’ Jews and as a result has been barred from conferences in America and been refused entry to Canada.

The sheikh will speak in Arabic, with his speech being translated into English.

Town councillor Alyas Ahmed has helped arrange the visit and said: “It is for all the community, we want as many people as possible to attend, of all religions and beliefs.”

He really is a Judeophobe:

^ Shaykh Abdur Rahmaan As-Sudays“. April 19, 2002. Retrieved on 2007-03-19. “

Read the history to know that yesterday’s Jews are evil predecessors and today’s Jews are worse successors. They an ingrate people, they altered God’s words, worshipped calf, killed Messengers and denied their Messages. They are exiled people and the worst of mankind. Allaah cursed them and cast His wrath upon them. He turned some of them to monkeys and pigs and worshippers of creatures. They are worst in position and are astray from the right path.…

History of Jews is full of deception, trickery, rebellion, oppression, evil and corruption. They always seek to cause mischief on the earth and Allaah loves not the mischief-makers.

This guy has been awarded the Islamic Personality of the Year:

In 2005 Al-Sudais was named by the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) Organising Committee as its 9th annual “Islamic Personality Of the Year” in recognition for his devotion to the Quran and Islam.[1] When accepting his award in Dubai, he said: “The message of Islam and Muslims is modesty, fairness, security, stability, sympathy, harmony and kindness.”[5]

Thank God Allah… Islam’s message is one of kindness, because if not, what would this guy have said about evil Jooooozzzzzzz!

Anyway, the Islamic Thinkers Society (Wikipedia: they want the Global Caliphate and oppose US, Christianity and culture and specially homosexuality, which they see as “Western”… what thinkers) has not a very well opinion of this guy:

Abdurahman as Sudais is famously known for his recitation as the state-appointed preacher at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. He is misusing the pulpit at Haram, as he slanders the Mujahideen As Qutaa at Turooq [ Highway Bandits], theives, Khawarij, etc. Like his colleagues, he has been calling for muwalaat to the Tawagheet in Arabia, & at one time so strongly that he referred as dying in a state of not giving baiyaah to them(the Saudi apostate rulers) as death in a state of Jahiliyyah. He further enraged the concious of the masses by using the pulpit in the Holy Haram to make Duaa for the good & well being of the Taghoot, and against the Mujahideen. Furthermore he has recently started to negate knowingly those aspects of the Deen that calls for casting fear in the enemies of Allah or showing bara’ to them. He laments about the deaths of “innocent” civilians but does not make a peep about the countless Muslims who have died as a result of aggression from the enemies of in our times (only Allah SWT knows the number). We have a message for him and people like him: Fear Allah, you recite the verses saying that every Muslim must protect his brothers and sisters yet you do not even denounce the massacres of the enemies of Islam with your tongue. Where were you when 1 million Iraqi babies died from radioactive fallout as a result of the Gulf War? He is a man who is blinded by his allegiance to the murtadeen of the Saudi government and sells out the Muslims for the sake of his government paycheck.

Oops… his invectives against the Jooozzzzzzz are not the only requirement to be considered by some Islamists as a pure Muslim. Lord, this world is difficult!

Central Asia: Hibz ut-Tahrir’s islamism is spreading

FEATURE-Tensions stir Islamist underground in Central Asia | Markets | Reuters

Sipping tea in a dim, smoke-filled teahouse in the Kyrgyz city of Osh, Rakhmatillo Ibragimov says the goal of his life is to restore Islamic rule in former Soviet Central Asia.

“They call us terrorists. That’s because they are afraid of us,” he says with a bashful smile that contrasts with the sharpness of his words. “The more they oppress us the stronger we become. We don’t want bloodshed. We want justice.”

A member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an outlawed Islamist group, he says ideas such as his are beginning to catch on in his native city of Osh in the Ferghana valley — a cauldron of ethnic and tribal tension in the heart of Central Asia.

Its dusty skyline pierced by the occasional minaret, Osh has long been synonymous with a post-Soviet rise of radical Islamism in a largely agrarian, cotton-growing region shared by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

But intense fighting in Afghanistan and rioting involving Muslim Uighurs in China to the east have put a new spin on old threats in an impoverished region lying at the centre of a geopolitical tug of war between Russia and the United States (link added by me).

Central Asia is really a puzzle, influenced by the delicate situation of both Afghanistan and Pakistan. But I don’t think that HuT can really solve anything there. In fact, it would complicate the situation further.

Wider policies of governments in Central Asia have probably contributed to the growth of Hizb ut-Tahrir, particularly in Uzbekistan. Repression by the Uzbek government has given it a certain mystique among some of the population, and the lack of alternative forms of political opposition or expression of discontent has ensured that it has attracted members from the mass of those opposed to the regime for political reasons. Poor economic policies have further undermined support for the government, and induced discontent among traders – a key Hizb ut-Tahrir constituency. Uzbekistan’s restrictive border regime has also increased support for a group that advocates a universal Muslim state (link also added by me), with no national distinctions.

For a small but significant group of predominantly young men, Hizb ut-Tahrir gives an easy explanation for their own failure to achieve change in their personal lives, in society or in the state system. It provides young men with some meaning and structured belief in an era of otherwise confusing and difficult social change. It also offers occasional material benefit and social support in states characterised by extreme poverty and social breakdown.

Drug trafficking in Central Asia is another complication of the present state of things in the region, together with corruption inherited from the USSR.

UK: the path from a difficult boy to a suicide bomber who committed suicide

Isa Ibrahim was a troublemaker at my school, but drugs and Islamism made him a terrorist – Telegraph Blogs

The blank stare was unrecognisable when Isa Ibrahim appeared on last night’s News at Ten. But it was definitely him – Andy, one of the most difficult boys I came across during my time in education. Now a young man, he had become “Isa”, sentenced to ten years in jail after police discovered his plans to suicide bomb a Bristol shopping centre.

When I knew Ibrahim – before his conversion to Islam and his change of name – he was a troublemaker, but certainly no terrorist. He was a couple of years below me at Downside, a Catholic school near Bath which was all boys until 2005. Even as public schools go, it was notably tough – many more of my schoolmates ended up in the Army than went to Oxbridge.

Ibrahim didn’t last long. Yesterday, the judge noted his “craving for attention”. It reminded me of one of my English classes. We were studying Heart of Darkness when loud shouting was heard from the next-door classroom. “Go to the detention room, you’re an absolute ass!”, a usually calm teacher bellowed. As my class looked up in surprise, Ibrahim loped past looking vaguely bored.

More likely, though, it was an addiction to drugs that made Ibrahim’s life disintegrate. He started on cannabis at a young age, and became lazy with school work. So he got in trouble with his teachers – and maybe his parents – which led to a resentment of figures of authority. The drug habits worsened, and he became addicted to heroin and cocaine.

Eventually, radical Islam offered Ibrahim a way out. It gave him a sense of identity. It granted him a feeling of imagined acceptance in a community of outcasts. It even helped him to overcome his drug addiction. How tragic and utterly terrifying, then, that it also inspired his lonely vision of suicide and mass murder.

I believe experts should look at these cases and really investigate what is happening to transform problematic guys into potential suicide bombers and how to stop that trend.

Turkey: alleged torturers and killers of three Christians don’t attend court hearing again

Missão Portas Abertas – Notícias – Turquia – Suspeitos de crime em Malatya não comparecem ao julgamento

Under the pretext of “recovering from a medical treatment” received at the beginning of this month, two of the main suspected killers of three Christians in Malatya haven’t attended the court for the second hearing, slowing again the procedure, according to the accusers.

The journalist Varol Bulent Aral, one of the suspected who incited five youths to brutally torture and kill Turkish Christians Necati Aydin and Ugur Yuksel and German Tilmann Geske at Zirve’s publishing company, two years ago, has again not attended the hearing, scheduled for July 17th.

The three Christians were tied and tortured before being murdered on April 18th, 2007, the Christian publishing company where they were working at the time. The alleged suspected Salih Guler, Cuma Ozdemir, Hamit Ceker, Abuzer Yildirim and gang-leader Emre Gunaydin were caught when they were fleeing the site of the crime.

Background: Bible publishing firm murders in Malatya, Turkey – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blog of the Persecuted Church has more on the trial. On 2008 it was reported that the impartiality of the judges was in doubt.

Compass Direct reports of the murder of another Christian in Istambul:

On a crowded street here last week a German businessman died after a Turk with a history of mental problems stabbed him for being a Christian.

Witnesses saw Ýbrahim Akyol, 26, stab Gregor Kerkeling in the chest on July 20 at 10:50 a.m. after following him out of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Istanbul’s central district of Beyoglu. Church security cameras captured the attack on Kerkeling, who regularly visited the church when he was in town for business.

Kerkeling, in his early forties, had just visited the church to pray that morning. Akyol, a Muslim who reportedly had been visiting area churches scouting around for a Christian victim, followed Kerkeling out of the church building and asked him for a Turkish lira. When Kerkeling refused and gestured him away, Akyol repeatedly stabbed him in the heart and chest area before passersby intervened. According to various news reports, an ambulance did not arrive in time to save Kerkeling’s life.

(…) In a statement to the prosecutor, Akyol reportedly confessed that he woke up that morning and decided he would kill a Christian. He took a kitchen knife with him and went to Istiklal Street, a long pedestrian and commercial road where some of the main traditional churches are located, looking for a victim.

I wanted to kill a Christian that day and was visiting churches for this reason,” he told prosecutors, according to the Hurriet Daily News. “I saw the person and killed him.”

Yet no outrage for the Muslim community as happened with the “Hijab Martyrcase. Another consequence of the creeping Islamization that affects Turkey.

Kenya: Expelled Dutchmen arrested on terror charges, now on Belgium

BBC NEWS | Africa | Expelled Dutchmen held in Belgium

Four Dutch nationals arrested and expelled by Kenya on suspicion of aiding insurgents in Somalia have been arrested in Belgium.

The 21-year-olds were arrested near the Somali border by Kenyan police who did not believe the four, of Moroccan and Somali origin, were tourists.

The Netherlands authorities have since opened a case against them and want the four men extradited from Belgium.

Hardline Islamists are battling Somalia’s UN-backed government.

There have been several recent reports of young men from the US, Europe and South Asia joining the insurgents in a “holy war”.

According to Malena Rembe of the Swedish Security Service, the Swedish-Somali man who died in Somalia had lived in Sweden since he was very young. This type of radicalization may pose a danger for Sweden, she says.

UK: the new columnist at the “New Statesman” considers all atheists, unbelievers as “cattle”

His name is Mehdi Hassan and these are his ideas on religion:

The kaffar, the disbelievers, the atheists who remain deaf and stubborn to the teachings of Islam, the rational message of the Quran; they are described in the Quran as, quote, “a people of no intelligence”, Allah describes them as; not of no morality, not as people of no belief – people of “no intelligence” – because they’re incapable of the intellectual effort it requires to shake off those blind prejudices, to shake off those easy assumptions about this world, about the existence of God. In this respect, the Quran describes the atheists as “cattle”, as cattle of those who grow the crops and do not stop and wonder about this world.”

The best thing is his double standard (once again… double standard…): this is what he wrote for the Guardian:

“I grow tired of having to also endure a barrage of lazy stereotypes, inflammatory headlines, disparaging generalisations and often inaccurate and baseless stories.

Doesn’t this guy thinks that people like him, who are caught saying this kind of baseless quotes (why Galileo, Saint Thomas of Aquinas or Pope Benedict are “cattle” and of “no intelligence” and Al-Qaeda’s goats killers are genius escapes my intelligence, oh, please, I have none), are really fuelling stereotypes?

Russia: last legislative measures ensure union betwen Orthodox Church and State

Pajamas Media » Putin Enlists the Church in His Power Grab

the government announced that it would consult the Russian Orthodox Church before introducing any legislative proposals in parliament, in essence giving the church a veto on legislation and allowing the church to promote an openly religious agenda in parliament. Then, the regime declared it would begin teaching Orthodox religion in schools, ignoring the constitutional requirement of separation of church and state. Study of other Christian faiths, like Protestantism and Catholicism, has already been ruled out, and it’s clear that the lip-service being paid to Islam is only window dressing.

As for Judaism, a spate of anti-Semitic acts make perfectly clear that the religion has no more future in Putin’s Russia than it did in the USSR.

It probably should not be surprising to see religion and politics begin to overlap in Russia, since both the leader of the Orthodox Church — Patriarch Kirill — and Vladimir Putin are former KGB spies. Indeed, it was not the men who separated from the KGB, but the organization that separated from them, when it collapsed along with the entire USSR apparatus. Putin has said he views that separation as one of the greatest tragedies in Russian history, and he played a key role in bringing Kirill to the seat of power.

From the Forbes’ article above:

there are values “that stand no lower than human rights.” These are “faith, morality, sacred places and homeland.” When these values contradict the realization of human rights, “the society and government and law should harmoniously combine them.” How this could be done was not made clear but, according to the Council, it is impossible to tolerate a situation in which human rights “threatened the existence of the motherland.”

Lord… that thing about the motherland, looks like as the “lover camps” Putin inaugurated some time ago…

Pakistan: president Zardari bans jokes mocking him

Pakistan president Asif Zardari bans jokes ridiculing him | Ethiopian News

Pakistan’s president, Asif Zardari, has been accused of suffering from a sense of humour failure after banning jokes ridiculing him.

Pakistanis who send jokes about Asif Zardari by text message, email or blog risk being arrested and given a 14-year prison sentence.

The country’s interior minister, Rehman Malik, announced the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had been asked to trace electronically transmitted jokes that “slander the political leadership of the country” under the new Cyber Crimes Act.

Mr Malik, said the move would punish the authors of “ill motivated and concocted stories through emails and text messages against the civilian leadership”.

Zardari jokes:

* “Terrorists have kidnapped our beloved Zardari and are demanding $5,000,000 or they will burn him with petrol. Please donate what you can. I have donated five litres.”

* To commemorate the ascension to the Presidency, Pakistan Post has officially launched a new stamp. But the people of Pakistan are confused which side on the stamp to spit on.

* Robber: “Give me all your money!”

Zardari: “Don’t you know who I am? I am Asif Ali Zardari.”

Robber: “OK. Give me all my money”

The effects of censorship: now the entire world can know that these jokes (which are extremely common in other countries) were also used in Pakistan. Nice work!

Saudi Arabia: divorced man goes into hiding after speaking openly about his sexual encounters

Man scandalizes with TV sex confession | Oddly Enough | Reuters

A divorced Saudi man with four children has shocked Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative countries in the world, with details of his sexual exploits on an Arabic television show.

Mazen Abdul-Jawad, 32, has gone into hiding after appearing two weeks ago on Lebanese channel LBC — mainly owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal — where he spoke to camera from his bedroom in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah about how couples can spice up their sex lives.

“Everything happens in this room,” he said on an episode of the salacious show “Ahmar Bilkhat al-Areed” (Wide Red Lines), before launching into descriptions of foreplay techniques and tricks for cruising women on the streets of Jeddah.

Clips of the racy confessions from the TV show, which can be seen via satellite in Saudi Arabia, have had nearly half a million hits on Youtube.

(…) He demonstrated how he would cruise girls in his red convertible or in supermarkets, often making use of Bluetooth mobile phone technology, and produced sex toys and lubricants from his bedroom cupboard.

“While I’m driving I turn my Bluetooth on. It has the description of my car and my mobile number… I get calls from girls… and in some cases I call back and she goes out with me,” he says in the Youtube clips.

Newspapers and bloggers have said the young man should face legal action for spreading vice in what has been dubbed by media as the “frank with filth case.

(…) “It is for that reason that he deserves to be stoned to death, as Islamic law stipulates.”, said an anonymous user on al-Medina newsaper’s web forum”

While every man watching the show would be taking notes about how to flirt with girls in the streets of Jeddah, they are calling to apply on him the stoning to deathtraditional conservative” Shariah Law. Remarkable.

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has experience with censorship in MSM. I wonder why he hasn’t said anything on the matter.

Pakistan: shelter for women attacked with acid, opened (video)

The shelter really was needed (thanks to Ekawaaz for the video): CAUTION, THE IMAGES ARE PRETTY DISTURBING, WATCH IT AT YOUR OWN RISK:

For a background on acid attacks you can see also this and this. In 2007 33 women were burned with acid only in Pakistan for “crimes” such as being a girl or their partners being suspicious at their activities -speaking with a neighbour or speaking on the phone-.

Lastly, don’t think this is something far or that is done only to women.

Comment: Ekawaaz wants me to comment on this. I don’t think that I can possibly comment much about people who can burn someone like that. For me, it’s just rationally impossible to think that there are someone so absolutely barbaric, cruel and savage to do something like that. It’s not only about the harm, the pain and the lost beauty. It’s about a society in which, if you’re a woman, you can’t do anything if you’re healthy and beautiful, but at least you can marry. After this kind of attacks, you can’t even marry as virtually no man is going to “love” (if that’s possible if the latter has being educated to consider you as a mule in the best of the cases) someone so disfigured. So you’re going to die of famine if no one helps you. So serious, so grave, so grievous. Absolutely disgusting, sickening, the cruelest of punishments.Cry

Because in the end, it’s your own family, those in which you (should) trust, those who you live with and those who (supposedly) you love and are loved by in return. In the end, the pain, the harm, the disfiguration… must be nothing to the feeling of being subject of this kind of treason.

Sudan: woman “faces 40 lashes” for “wearing trousers”

BBC NEWS | Africa | Sudanese woman ‘faces 40 lashes’

A Sudanese woman who is due to appear in court in Khartoum says she faces up to 40 lashes for wearing trousers.

The woman, Lubna Hussein – a former journalist who now works for the United Nations – has invited journalists and observers to the trial.

She was arrested in a restaurant in the capital with other women earlier this month for wearing “indecent” clothing.

She said 10 of the women arrested, including non-Muslims, later each received 10 lashes and a fine of $100.

Ms Hussein and two other women asked for a lawyer, delaying their trials.

Now Ms Hussein has printed 500 invitation cards and sent out e-mails, saying she wants as many people as possible to attend her hearing on Wednesday.

She says she has done nothing wrong under Sharia law, but could fall foul of a paragraph in Sudanese criminal law which forbids indecent clothing.

BBC NEWS | Africa | France condemns Sudan floggings

France has condemned the flogging of several women in Sudan, who were being punished for wearing trousers.

Czech Republic: Christian Democrats against the construction of a new mosque

Christian Democrats against new mosque in Brno | Prague Monitor

South Moravian Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) are against the construction of a second mosque in Brno, Stanislav Juranek, chairman of the regional party organisation, said Monday.

He said the Muslims who want to live in the Czech Republic should adapt themselves to the local traditions.

“It would be a great mistake to allow them (traditions) being pushed away by a foreign culture and religion,” he told journalists.

Munib Hasan, from the Brno-based Islamic foundation, who recently announced the plan to build a new mosque, dismissed Juranek’s opinion.

He said Brno Muslims have always rejected any radicalism and oppression.

KDU-CSL deputy chairman David Macek said the Christian Democrats recognise freedom of religious faith, but added he is embarrassed about some demands of Islamists.

He said, for instance, Vladimir Sanka writes in a manual on what is allowed and what is banned in Islam that Muslims need not obey anyone who does not preach Islam.

The manual also sets death penalty for unfaithful women and renegades from Islam, Macek said.

Certainly they are not radicals… (irony)…

Thailand: Southern terrorists could have received training from JI

Bin LadenSouthern insurgents have embraced transceiver technology in their bomb attacks, a technique found to be common in the Iraq war.

Radio transceivers are known to have triggered recent bombings in the far South. They make for a more efficient trigger device than mobile phones because authorities cannot interfere with the signals.

A bomb attack in Yala’s Yaha district on July 17, which killed two soldiers and wounded five people, is believed to have been detonated by a transceiver, said Khunying Porntip Rojanasunan, director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science.

The insurgents have also produced home-made grenades which they hurl into crowds.

One bizarre device they have invented is a fake boundary marker stuffed with explosives which mostly targets authorities on patrol duty.

Khunying Porntip said the militants usually destroy the real markers and replace them with fakes. The bomb inside is triggered by a mobile phone or is wired to a timer.

She said authorities should coordinate intelligence information and keep abreast of new forms of attacks.

Col Tawisak Jantrasin, head of the army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit, said the use of transceivers to launch attacks was not new. It has been absent from the attack scenes for a long time. But the Yaha assault confirmed the device had made a comeback and this time the transceiver-detonated explosion had been a lot harder to foil.

via Bangkok Post : JI bomb-maker linked to southern militants.

Jemaah Islamiyah seems to have spread throughout all South-Eastern Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia have been discovering lately that the organization or its offshot, Noordin’s Tanzim aidat al-Jihad, were actually present and active in their soil. Now Thailand‘s “separatists” may have also received JI’s training.

Dubay: Displeased with “Sex and the City” because of “sex” in the title

I imagine that the content of the film could have had something to do too: Libero News – ‘Sex and the City’ stoppato a Dubai Non piace la parola ‘sesso’ nel titolo

Sex and the City: Dubai's authorities are displeased because of the word "sex".

Sex and the City: Dubai's authorities are displeased because of the word "sex".

“Sex and the City 2″, which was scheduled to be filmed in Dubai has been stopped: in its path, the film has found a truly hard obstacle, the tradtional conservative culture of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates’ financial weekly, Arabian Business, has reported about it, quoting US MSM. “The Emirates’ authorities are very displeased” – it can be read it its site – “with the title because of the word “sex”“. Something which makes people think that the scenes scheduled for Dubai will be cancelled.

Arabian Business -which calls the film infamous- and Financial Express report about it in English.

Note: I am not a fan of this film but considering Islamic world’s problems with sex, maybe watching people speaking freely about these issues would change their pre-historic views on sex.

India: people speak up against honor killings

This is an update on this story: Haryana can’t be Taliban country, say youth on honour killings :: Samay Live

:flagindia:Love stories often go wrong in Haryana, especially if the couple does not meet social norms. But at last some young people from the state are speaking up against shocking honour killings that are carried out at the behest of caste councils.

“This is not Taliban country where we are living. The claims of our chief minister that Haryana is the most progressive and prosperous state of the country prove false in the wake of such dreadful incidents,” Anand Ahalawat, an engineering student at Panjab University (PU), told IANS.

“We cannot live in such fearful conditions any more. We have to start a mass movement to eradicate such illogical khaps,” said Ahalawat, who is a native of Ambala town in Haryana and is staying here in a hostel.

Many cases of young couples being lynched for marrying against the wishes of their community have come up in the state, a rash of them recently.

Most communities in Haryana villages have their ‘khap panchayats’, or caste councils, which pass illegal decrees on marriages and social customs. The khap panchayats enforce their diktat through violence.

Indian Government has also spoken against them:

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday ruled out enactment of a new law to deal with honour killings but said the government was ready to consider whether the crime should be defined.

He said caste panchayats, which aid and abet such killings, are equally guilty and should be treated as murder accomplices.

Really different from Islamic countries, where there are virtually no punishments (or if there are, they are ridiculous) for killing people out of “honor”.

Burma/Myanmar: Suu Kyi’s trial over, verdict on Friday

Aung San Suu Kyi verdict due on Friday | World news |

JudgeThe trial of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi ended today with the judge announcing he will deliver his verdict by the end of the week.

The Nobel peace prize laureate is charged with breaking the terms of her house arrest by allowing an American man to spend two nights at her home in May. She faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.

Last-ditch attempts to call Nyunt Maung Shein, Burma’s former ambassador to the UN, to testify in court were rejected.

Government officials and diplomats said the judge, Thaung Nyunt, had ended the trial and announced there would be a ruling on Friday. There has been little word yet on today’s proceedings. The media have been banned from the most of the trial, although diplomats from Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the US were allowed to attend today.

An official told Reuters that Aung San Suu Kyi’s trial had been completed, but cases against three other defendants were continuing.

We have done our best and she is prepared for the worst,” her lawyer, Nyan Win, told reporters. “We don’t want to speculate, but we will keep exploring all legal avenues.”

Nigeria: hostages held by “Boko Haram”, freed*

BBC NEWS | Africa | Hostages freed in Nigerian city

Nigerian police have freed more than 180 women and children being held by a radical Islamist sect in a building in the northern city of Maiduguri.

They told the BBC they had been held six days, living on dates and water.

Heavy fighting continues in Maiduguri where troops are besieging militants of the Boko Haram sect in an enclave.

Boko Haram is blamed for attacks on police stations and government sites in the north this week that led to the deaths of at least 150 people.

This is an update on this story.

They also attacked a mosque, killing 100 Boko Haram’s followers, including sect deputy. But sect leader, Mohammed Yusuf, could escape with other 300 followers.

In other violence, Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper reported that militants attacked security forces in Yobe state on Wednesday, and quoted police as saying that 43 sect members were killed in a shootout near the state’s second city, Potiskum.

Police in Bauchi state have reported 42 people killed, including two soldiers and a police officer, 67 hospitalized with serious injuries and 157 men arrested.

The followers of Al-Sunna wal Jamma desire to implement Sharia Islamic law and this applies to controlling the Christian community and followers of traditional beliefs. Once more it is about religion and politics being entwined together under a theocratic theory whereby minorities will become dhimmis.

Islamic Sharia law means that all non-Muslims are inferior in law and society will restrict the movement of women and non-Muslims. Just like what happened in Sudan when policies of Islamization and Arabization were enforced on Africans in this nation. The result of this policy was the enslavement of non-Muslims and a violent civil war, whereby millions were killed.

(…) At the moment the situation is chaotic and hundreds of people have been killed. Also, attacks have erupted in the past by Al-Sunna wa Jamma and then this movement went underground. However, last year many Christians and Muslims were killed in Jos and you have reports of Christian churches being destroyed during the current crisis.
